Jolanta Johnsson
Winter in Mountains

2008

About the Item

Winter in Mountains – Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about this painting: Winter mountain drawing depicts winter in the mountains, and it is an unusual time. Nature has frozen in stillness. The trees and the ground are covered in a white blanket of snow. This whiteness makes the landscape seem unreal. It is not the view we know. This is a different land. Outlined with specks of color peeking out from under the snow. These tiny elements are arranged in patterns as if woven by a great weaver. He has woven this winter carpet by breaking up successive snowfalls. He spreads it wide, over peaks and valleys. The peaks poke through it and the valleys allow themselves to be covered. Streaks of snow-covered valleys wind their way down the slopes, crossing them in their own way, as if arbitrarily. The pattern of the carpet unfolds over the chain of mountains. One can read their shapes through their arrangement. High peaks force us to look up at the irregular line of the horizon. The horizon is always a special place for our eyes. It is where something ends and something begins. The straight line of the horizon is reassuring. The jagged line of the mountain horizon disquiets, but it also calls out and promises us something. That is why we go to the mountains. I titled this colourful painting winter mountain drawing because in winter the landscape is so clear, as if drawn by nature. It seems that somebody bigger than the mountains came in drawing ideas mountain motif. It is as if some great invisible hand took coloured pencils, sharpened them very precisely and drew all these lines of ridges and mountain valleys. And then on their slopes, with little lines of white crayon, she marked sheets of snow lazily lying on the slopes. How to draw snow on mountains? – this question stays open for me and I ask myself it anew every winter while drawing sceneries of mountains. I like to go on hikes in the mountains with my sketchbook in my pocket. While hiking I stop when I see mountains to draw. Nothing can replace such notes as quick sketches drawn on the fly. Especially in winter when snow covers the mountainsides creating mountains with snow drawing, as if by itself, without my participation, draws a snow on mountains drawing or sometimes it seems to be a winter mountains painting. This image is painted on handmade paper. The uneven edges of the paper add to the artwork. The painting is painted with acrylic paints and coloured inks.

Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about the drawing: "The sunset today is extraordinary. As the sun sets, its round disc descends towards the horizon to eventually disappear behind it completely. This is when it changes colors, which become more and more intense. This spectacle is always interesting, each time different. No two sunsets are the same. One day it was so beautiful that it inspired me to make this drawing. That day was today, so I titled it Sunset Today. It is a symbolic title. It acts as a kind of reminder – the sun will also be set today. Today is also the day to watch the sun wander over the horizon. Don’t miss it! When we are surrounded by trees, the horizon line is collapsed. As the sun sets, it hides in their branches. Then, for a moment, the trees look as if they are on fire embracing the fiery sun ball...
