Hano Dercksen
Amsterdam in the Rain, Original Painting

2017

About the Item

Artist Comments
"When the city lights and the dusk match up, Amsterdam can be a pretty orange place to be," says artist Hano Dercksen. Pedestrians happily walk under their green, blue, and pink umbrellas, providing pops of complementary color in the orange and brown composition. A row of charming crooked buildings lines the background. Heavily influenced by comics as a child, Hano brings forward that same light-hearted quality to his paintings.

About the Artist
Artist Hano Dercksen paints nostalgic cityscapes and seascapes using his signature style of graphic realism. Hano grew up in a small town on the east coast of South Africa, where he says the idea of pursuing art for a living was considered truly absurd. At the age of 19, he boarded a plane and traveled the world. Hano lived in the United States and spent a decade in Brazil before settling in Canada. "The shimmering variety of how people live their lives, their ideas of what art is, and the idea that every life is a unique and vibrant experience makes me bleed paint," says Hano. "The world is a big place and I have to draw it all." Today, he works as a carpenter, building and repairing structures, which provides an important source of inspiration for his paintings of daily life. Hano takes lots of reference photos of architecture and industrial equipment he sees on job sites, later studying and sketching the images in his home studio. From there, he slowly builds up layers of transparent paint, while "fighting the never ending battle to keep the art clean and smudge free."

  • Dream Time, Original Painting
    By Darlene McElroy
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
Heavily collaged piece featuring handwritten notes, book pages, flowers and delicately crossed hands. Darlene says the artwork is centered around the concept of renewing our soul. "We all need quiet time where we can think and dream, whether it is just enjoying nature, reading a book or thinking of special people in our life."

    About the Artist
Darlene McElroy sees creating art as similar to reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story becomes revealed as one looks at the surface, texture and color. Her works use a variety of materials ranging from acrylic paints to photo transfers and collage. She currently lives in New Mexico and has been greatly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg. She encourages viewers to search for their narrative interpretation when viewing a work.

'I am a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ecofeminism using fiber and mixed media constructions. My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. Intense work is spent creating the eyes and ears to convey the emotion of each animal. I look to the work of Joan Mitchell and The Quilters of Gee’s Bend as inspiration for pattern and color, as well as charts, iconography, and satellite imaging.' -Gin Stone...

'My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it.' Theda Sandiford...
