Alfred Munnings
Alfred Munnings was born on 8th October 1878 at Mendham Mill, Mendham, Suffolk, across the River Waveney from Harleston in Norfolk to Christian parents. His father was the miller and Munnings grew up surrounded by the activity of a busy working mill with horses and horse-drawn carts arriving daily. After leaving Framlingham College at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a Norwich printer, designing and drawing advertising posters for the next six years, attending the Norwich University of the Arts in his spare time. When his apprenticeship ended, he became a full-time painter. The loss of sight in his right eye in an accident in 1898 did not deflect his determination to paint, and in 1899 two of his pictures were shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He painted rural scenes, frequently of subjects such as Gypsies and horses. Munnings was associated with the Newlyn School of painters, and there he met Florence Carter-Wood, a young horsewoman and painter. They married on 19th January 1912, but she tried to kill herself on their honeymoon and did so in 1914. Munnings bought Castle House, Dedham, in 1919, describing it as "the house of my dreams." He used the house and adjoining studio extensively throughout the rest of his career, and it was opened as the Munnings Art Museum in the early 1960s, after Munnings's death. He was elected president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1944, was made a Knight Bachelor in the same year, and was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1947 New Year Honors. Munnings died at the Castle House, Dedham, Essex, on 17th July 1959. The village pub in Mendham is named after him, as is a street there. His immensely popular sporting artworks have enjoyed popularity in the United States as well as the United Kingdom and elsewhere. During his lifetime, some of Munnings's works were purchased by the wealthiest collectors of the day. In 2007, his Red Prince Mare sold for $7,848,000.

Daphne Moore, the hunting correspondent writing about the Croome Hounds c.1950, emphasised the influence of Rambler as a perfect type of hound. ‘Who could have dreamed that in 1949 well-bred hounds in almost every kennel in England would have at least a trace of Rambler’s blood in their veins?’ … to the hound man The Croome and the name Coventry immediately recalls Rambler. Anyone who has seen his portrait by Lutyens, will remember him as being the perfect type of hound for any country…’ Charles Lutyens the artist spent his early adult life in the Army, joining the 20th foot and siled with them in 1850 to serve in Canada. - "Mid Summer Journey on Sledge" Impressionist South African PaintingBy John Koenakeefe MohlLocated in Houston, TXOil painting on canvas board of a sledge pulled by oxen. The painting is done in an impressionist style. The canvas board is signed by the artist on the front and titled, signed and dated on the back. The board is not framed. Artist Biography: John Koenakeefe Mohl was born on 29 September 1903 in Dinokana, Zeerust in the North-West Province. Mohl's father was a carpenter who sculpted objects such as chairs and mealie stampers. During his youth, Mohl drew with 'pepa' on rocks and made clay objects. He attended primary school in Dinokana where his teachers reprimanded him for constantly drawing in class. Mohl's father eventually withdrew him from school to tend to the goats. Nevertheless, Reverend Hale soon recognized Mohl’s talent and convinced his father to allow him to draw. Mohl attended the Moeding Training Institute (later known as Tigerkloof Training School) where he attained a teacher’s diploma. He subsequently accompanied a German artist to South West Africa (now Namibia) where he studied painting at the Windhoek School of Art. The Missionary Society and the Lutheran Church then sent him to Dusseldorf, West Germany where he studied art at the Kunst-Akademie during the following five years. The artist later returned to South Africa and settled in Sophiatown, where he started running art classes from his home. His art school was known to his peers as the ‘White Studio’. He was one of the first Black artists to be involved in art education and training. In the late 1950s, he was prevented from operating a business; therefore he established the Apollo Art...Category
