"Dancing Love" contemporary ethereal nude figures in green and blue water

2022

About the Item

"Dancing Love" is a contemporary painting of ethereal nude figures in green and blue water. Astone brought professional dancers into her studio and let them improvise as she painted them. She decided to paint this particular position the dancers held for only a moment in a larger canvas because she loved the way the male and female dancers' bodies intertwined in not a typical freeze-frame of a grande jete or lift. She placed the dancers in deep water in her canvas as part of a larger surrealistic series of figures floating through ethereal space—sometimes water, sometimes outer space. Astone's recent inspiration—after years of intense academic studio work painting only from life—comes from her dreams. unframed Daniela Astone was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1980 and raised in Porto Santo Stefano, a costal town south of Florence. She discovered her passion for drawing and painting at a very young age, and began nourishing and cultivating her craft early on. In 1997, after graduating from the High School for Visual Arts, she moved to Florence to deepen her knowledge of painting. Upon arriving, she first worked in illustration, then, in 2001, enrolled in The Florence Academy of Art where she graduated in 2004, and she is now Director of the Intermediate Program. In 2003, Daniela participated, as a student, in the exhibition, “Realism Revisited” at Panorama Museum, Bad Frankenhausen, Germany. In 2004, she won the Best Painting of the Year award at The Florence Academy of Art. In September 2006 she participated in “The Florence Academy of Art Masters”, at Ettinger Gallery in New York. In 2013, she was accepted into the National Gallery BP Portrait Competition. That same year Daniela was awarded Honorable Mention at Modportrait Artelibre, Spain. Daniela works are in private collections in Italy, England and the U.S.

  • The Kiss - 2023, dark figurative oil painting by Daniela Astone
    By Daniela Astone
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today. Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background. 52.8 x 44.9 inches framed Artist Bio Daniela Astone was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1980 and raised in Porto Santo Stefano...

  • 'Security' Conceptual Nude Portrait
    By Dinh Y Nhi
    Located in Rye, NY
‘Security’ is a large framed contemporary surrealist figurative oil on canvas painting of vertical format, created by Vietnamese artist Dinh Y Nhi in 2010. Featuring a cold palette mostly made of grey and black tones, accented with blue and beige touches, the painting depicts a frontal view of a nude figure. This piece exemplifies Y Nhi's style of paintings as her success with two-colors; red, blue or black and white, addresses modern themes and issues devoid of gender. Her figurative surrealism style of stick figures is warped and elongated, stretched out of proportion. Each figure tilts and twists at painful angles. They bring to mind the famous harrowing faces in Edward Munch's ‘The Scream’, or the difficult distorted ones from the portraits of Francis Bacon. But most of the faces Y Nhi paints are miniature ones devoid of details, deceptively random and simple brush strokes. There is a playfulness that reflects the outer images the painter projects of herself. Her style also allows her to convey complex textures, and emotions, in her images. Dinh Y Nhi is a graduate of Hanoi's School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited in many shows in Vietnam. She is receiving much notice among the Vietnamese press and art patrons in the United States, Australia and Asian countries. With its powerful presence and great proportions, this surrealist oil on canvas painting will be a definite conversation piece in any home, whether placed above a sofa, console table or enfilade. Set inside a frame, the painting is titled in the lower section. 1967: Born in Hanoi, Vietnam 1989: Graduated from Hanoi Fine Art University Exhibitions: 2011: Group Exhibition Art Asia Miami, Florida, AiBo Fine Asia Art 2011: Portrait, Dinh Y Nhi & Le Thiet Cuong...

  • Hello Hen ! Large Surrealist Contemporary Oil on Canvas.
    By Frank Docherty
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. The title 'Hello Hen !' ( Hen being the scottish slang for 'girl' ) is used playfully as a double-entendre. In the image we see the artist has before him a beautiful naked woman and yet chooses to paint the real hen. Also we notice that the plant's flower heads under the woman are wilting and the artist pictured (a self portrait of Docherty), an older man, suggest that the artist's desires are on the wane. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...
