View Venice See Giudecca Guardi 18/19th Century Paint Oil on canvas Old master

1780-1820

About the Item

Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764 - Venice, 1835) View of Venice with the Giudecca Canal and the Gesuati Church oil on canvas 34 x 42 cm. - framed 40 x 50 cm. Expertise dott Federica Spadotto The beautiful view of Venice elects the church of Santa Maria del Rosario, known to Venetians as the Gesuati, built on the Giudecca Canal by Giorgio Massari between 1724 and 1736, as the protagonist of the representation. It is a painting by Giacomo Guardi (Venice, 1764 - Venice, 1835), son and pupil of the well-known Vedutista Francesco Guardi, who continued his father's activity by painting many views and capriccios. His production boasts especially small-format compositions because they were intended to meet the demands of collectors and refined foreign travellers who desired an elegant souvenir of the lagoon city during their Grand Tour. Their small size allowed them to be carried along with their luggage, while now these small 'postcards' have become highly sought-after and appreciated by modern collectors. The style of the painting is modelled on the modus pingendi of Francesco Guardi (Venice, 1712-1793) - a comparison is easy to make in terms of the treatment of water, boats and macchiette - thus testifying to Giacomo's profound knowledge of the manner elaborated by his father, albeit declined in a personal interpretation of his pictorial microcosm. Looking in fact at the same religious building, immortalised in numerous paintings of Francesco's late maturity - among them the 'View of the Giudecca Canal to the Northwest with the Zattere' (circa 1760, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin) [1] - we can admire the execution of a choral vision, which by dilating the perspective view offers a great overall view. [1] Francesco Guardi ( Venice 1712-1793) View of the Giudecca Canal to the Northwest with the Zattere (c. 1760) - Gemäldegalerie, Berlin This propensity was not, however, inherited by his son Giacomo who, instead, often preferred to extrapolate a precise segment with extreme fidelity, here making the church of Santa Maria del Rosario the protagonist. The corpus of Guardi junior is no stranger to such licences and, although he is familiar with his parent's prototype, he chooses to adopt a completely different approach, "cutting out" a cameo from Francesco's very broad perspective vision; the shot narrows down and elects the church overlooking the waters of the Lagoon as the protagonist of the canvas, which he garnishes with the same figures present in his father's counterpart, to reiterate the referential platform of belonging. The view, in excellent condition, undamaged and without significant restorations, repainted not recently, is enriched by a beautiful gilded frame. • Storm See Water Landscape Vernet 18th Century Paint Oil on canvas Old master
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Claude-Joseph Vernet (Avignon, 1714 - Paris, 1789) workshop of The Storm on the Lighthouse 1750/60 Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 48 x 67 cm / framed 77 x 93 cm We share a highly pleasing work, a splendid marine executed by a talented painter from the workshop of the Frenchman Claude-Joseph Vernet, depicting a coastal view set in a Mediterranean port with the sea still stormy. The focal point of the composition is the large lighthouse at the entrance to the port, which, due to the power of the sea, was unable to bring to safety the ship that had crashed against the rocks, while the silhouette of a second sailing ship can be glimpsed in the distance. The canvas shows in full the pictorial, chromatic and narrative characteristics of the great master Vernet's coastal landscapes, characterised by the inimitable atmospheric conditions always hovering between darkness and light, storm and calm, instilling the observer with contrasting feelings, made even more intense by a palette of vibrant and highly contrasting colours. A similar composition, from which our author must necessarily have drawn, also attributed to the workshop of Claude Joseph Vernet is to be found in France, in Nantes, at the Musée d'Arts. The effects of the light create a visual drama in the contrast between the darkness of the rain-laden storm clouds and the gash of clear sky that is opening up, pierced by the timid rays of light. The real magic of the painting is the painter's highly personal use of light and colour, with chiaroscuro effects that accentuate its three-dimensionality and movement.
The compositional typology, as well as the quality of execution and attention to detail we are dealing with, are typical elements of the 'prototypes' conceived by the master, later taken up around the middle of the 18th century by his best pupils. Similar versions can be found in the most important international museums and private collections, belonging to a large series of paintings that the master created, together with his collaborators, during his stay in Italy. Vernet lived in Rome for twenty years (1734 - 1753), becoming particularly popular with English aristocrats who stopped there on their Grand Tour. International fame followed him from Rome to France, and to his English and French clients he added German princes...

  • Martyrdom of Saint Stephen- Painting attr. to Vincent Adriaenssen- 17th Century
    Located in Roma, IT
Landscape with martyrdom of Saint Stephen is an old master artwork realized in 17th century. Mixed colored oil painting on canvas. Includes coeval gilded frame cm. 148x196. The artwork is attributed to Vincent Adriaenssen called il Manciola (Antwerp, 1595 - Roma, 1675) Among the painters who worked in the first half of the seventeenth century it is possible to indicate only the Neapolitan Scipione Compagno (1624-1680) as the author of scenes of martyrs set within a landscape or a view such as, for example, the Martyrdom of Saint Stefano recently hesitated at the Ansorena in Madrid on June 16, 2021. It should be noted, however, that the landscape represented in the painting examined here, characterized by luxuriant vegetation, meticulously represented "in the Flemish style", shows differences with the typical settings of the paintings di Compagno, characterized above all by urban views, visionary architectures or rather arid vegetation. Even the refined figures, so elongated and lanky, represented in our painting, in particular the group of knights in the foreground on the right, are not reflected in the production of the Neapolitan painter. These elements, to which we add the depiction of the Eternal Father amidst the clouds and the detail of the dog in profile in the foreground, instead recall a painter mainly known as a battle soldier, but who was also the author of many works depicting episodes from ancient Rome set within luxuriant landscapes, or rather Vincent Adriaenssen known as Manciola, a painter from Antwerp whose figure has been shed light thanks to recent studies. The group of horsemen represented to the right of the examined painting is, in fact, comparable with other groups on horseback present in numerous works by Manciola such as, for example, in the Triumph of Caesar (Rome, Babuino, 23-03-2010; formerly Florence, Collection Privata, 2006), while similar elongated and somewhat lanky figures, dressed in red, yellow, blue and white, can be found in the three paintings conserved at the Cassa di Risparmio di Pesaro, which in the past were erroneously attributed to the Umbrian painter Francesco Allegrini...
