Henri Brispot was a French painter of genre scenes, figures, interiors in oil, watercolours, pastels and engravings he was also a designer. He was a contemporary of Jean Beraud and they were both pupils of Leon Bonnat. Both artists were very successful in recording Parisian society during the Belle Epoque and each owe their inspiration to Impressionists such as Degas and Manet. Brispot was best known for his genre scenes, usually figure subjects in interiors. Brispot captures this atmosphere perfectly and he effortlessly creates each charming character with skill and realism. The artist exhibited his works at the Salon until 1927. He received an Honourable Mention in 1881, a third class medal in 1885 and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. • 'Attilla' A Chestnut Horse in a Stable
    By John Frederick Herring Sr.
    Located in St. Albans, GB
Canvas Size: 28 x 36" (71 x 91cm) Outside Frame Size 36 x 44" (91 x 111cm) It is signed on the middle right on the wooden window. This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these. Free carriage worldwide John Frederick HERRING Snr 1795 – 1865 A sporting painter, born in Surrey of American/Dutch extraction. At first he was a sign and coach painter. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849 Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved. He painted many pictures of the Copeland family, some of which were adapted and used as designs on the Spode china...

He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. • Beautiful Woman Arranging Flowers in Atrium Conservatory Greenhouse PARIS 1884
    By Christian Henri Roullier
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Christian-Henri Roullier was born in Lyon, France, in 1845, and was an infant when his parents arrived in gold-rush San Francisco. After much difficulty, Roullier senior found employment at the White House, a pioneer department store owned by a popular and successful French businessman, Raphael Weill. From then, the Roulliers' life took a prosperous turn. Christian-Henri resided with his family in San Francisco at the beginning of his career. During the Franco-Prussian War he was listed, with other members of the city's French community, as a local subscriber to a French patriotic fund. He subsequently traveled to Paris to study painting with Jean-Leon Gerome the leading teacher of the day. He also studied sculpture with W. E. Fremiet and explored both media throughout his life. A successful artist, Roullier exhibited widely in France. His work was included in most Paris Salon exhibits between 1878 and 1914. He exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association and the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco in 1883, suggesting that he had returned to San Francisco, perhaps working with Jules Tavernier, whom he depicted in buckskin and knee-high boots in an oil entitled Tavernier Painting. Roullier probably joined the gregarious Tavernier in Monterey as well. Among his portraits, he executed two of Josiah Stanford, now in the collection at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. When in France, Roullier and his sister Blanche spent half of their time in Paris, the remainder at a beautiful property the family bought in the small town of Saint-Nizier sous Charlieu, some ten miles from Roanne. Blanche became a successful pastellist who also exhibited at the French salons and received several awards. Like his friend and fellow-painter Armand Charnay, Roullier painted rustic, local scenes of his native region, except for a few canvases of Tunisia done in colors reminiscent of his California work. He died in Paris on July 25, 1926. A retrospective exhibit of his work was held at the 1926 Paris Winter...
