Exhibited: Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1900, no.101 The Goupil Gallery, London, 1905 No.3 Purchased from the Goupil Gallery by Monsieur Léon Payen, Paris. Hôtel Drouot, The sale of the Collection Payen, 29 June 1916, n°75. Henri Le Sidaner went to Paris in 1880 and became a pupil of Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1884. He lived in Brussels and Bruges in 1898 and 1899, then in 1900 moved to Gerberoy in the Oise, and later to Versailles. Le Sidaner's art falls oddly between that of the late Impressionists, whose divisionism he practised, and that of Eugène Carrière, which is characterised by indeterminate colours and a taste for a certain misty atmosphere. He often painted in Venice and Bruges and is noted for his twilight effects. C. Mauclair, a writer imbued with the symbolist spirit, has perhaps best described his talent. Among his most notable works are Blessing the Sea, Patrol in Moonlight, Canal in Bruges, and The Ducal Palace and Grand Canal, Venice. He exhibited in Paris for the first time in 1887 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded a third-class medal and a travel scholarship in 1891. He also exhibited in Paris at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and in Brussels at the Salon de la Libre Esthétique. He was awarded a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900. In 1930 Le Sidaner, an officer of the Légion d'Honneur, was appointed a member of the Institut, to replace E. Laurent at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Retrospectives of his work were held at the museum of Dunkirk in 1974, the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Liège, in 1996, and then in Carcassonne and Limoux. Among the other exhibitions and retrospectives have been Henri Le Sidaner en son jardin de Gerberoy, de 1901 à 1939, held in 2001 at the Musée de la Chartreuese, Douai, and Henri Le Sidaner en Bretagne, 2002, at the museum of Pont-Aven. • La Porte Saint Denis, Paris - Post Impressionist Cityscape Oil by Lucien Genin
    By Lucien Génin
    Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed oil on original canvas figures in landscape circa 1930 by French post impressionist painter Lucien Genin. The work is centred around the Porte Saint-Denis - a triumphal arch located in Paris, France. The street is bustling with city-goers and cars pass by the tall buildings painted in red, yellow and white. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 27"x31" Unframed: 20"x24" Provenance: Private French collection Lucien Génin came from a family of stone-cutters. He first studied at the art school in Rouen, then in 1919 entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He settled in Montmartre early in the 1920s, and in 1936 moved to the Latin Quarter. Although he had received a thorough training, he created his own completely spontaneous technique aiming at approaching his subjects with a fresh look. Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache. Lucien Génin showed work at the Salon d'Automne in 1926 and 1930. His work featured at the Marcel Aymé and the Painters exhibition, Galerie Roussard...
