About the Item
Wild period abstract expressionist painting by Morris Shulman. The painting is egg tempera on Masonite measuring 32" x 22". Signed M Shulman and dated '51 at the lower right. Titled verso "Procession (Mushrooms)." In the early 1950s, Shulman produced a number of paintings focusing on marine and terrestrial plant life of Monhegan Island - many of these included images of Mushrooms. Rehn Gallery correspondence available through the Smithsonian documents Shulman's preoccupation with Mushrooms, especially Amanita mushrooms, which he painted repeatedly. This particular painting was exhibited at the Rehn Gallery in 1951 .
The painting is in excellent untouched condition. Contained within an exceptional carved wood frame. Ready to hang.

Morris Shulman
Morris Shulman was born in Savannah, Georgia, but spent most of his professional career in Manhattan. He studied with Hans Hofmann in 1948–49 and painted on Maine's Monhegan Island from about 1947–65. Rocks & Sea is representative of his works from the period from the very late 1940s through the mid-1950s. Shulman is very well listed, and his works can be found in the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian.
