Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe 22 x 22 inches oil on linen canvas Signed on reverse Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life. In this work, three vibrant peach colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people. With intense attention paid to form and light, Kelly nevertheless manages to abstract the landscape just slightly, breaking earth, sky, and atmosphere down to their most elemental qualities. In this painting, a snowy hillside is rendered in shades of white, cream, and blue, contrasted with the warm sienna and umber hue of the trees and a crimson chair. An expansive winter landscape can be glimpsed just beyond the treetops. About the artist: Hudson Valley based painter John Kelly received his education from the Art Institute of Boston and Buffalo State. He has been exhibiting around the northeastern United States since the 1970s.
