Large circa 1930 British Expressionist view of Toledo, Spain, oil on canvas by William Johnstone OBE. Excellent quality and condition, signed and titled work.

Artist Biography
William Johnstone was encouraged to take up an artistic career by the painter Tom Scott (the Elder). He trained at Edinburgh College of Art and spent time in Paris. He was Director of Camberwell College of Art in London from 1938 to 1946, and of the Central School of Art and Design from 1947 to 1960. Johnstone was one of the first members of the English art establishment to recognise the work of the Surrealists in Paris. His own paintings were inspired by Surrealism and by American art of the 1920s. His distinctive Abstract Expressionist works have sometimes been compared to those of Jackson Pollock.
