Charles T. Webber
Period Portrait of Ohio Governor and Abolitionist Charles Anderson

1883

About the Item

Portrait and history painter Charles Webber was born in New York State and moved to Cincinnati in the later 19th century. There he became a leader in that city’s art circles. He is known for large historical paintings and Abolitionist themes were particularly of interest to him. The subject of this portrait is Charles Anderson, the 27th governor of Ohio and whose tenure coincided with the end of the Civil War. Anderson was born to a prominent family in Louisville, Kentucky in 1814. He studied law and graduated from Miami (Ohio) University in 1833. Anderson was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1844 and became well known as an advocate for Black rights. He was sent by Lincoln on a pro-Union speaking tour of Europe prior to his joining the Union Army as Colonel. Though not elected, he was Lieutenant Governor to John Brough. Upon Brough’ death in 1865, Anderson took the state’s highest office for the next five months. Upon leaving the statehouse, he returned to Kentucky and his legal practice for his remaining forty five years. This thoughtful and personal portrait depicts a reflective Charles Anderson in his later years, likely 1883, as a reverse label states. At that time he would have been sixty eight years old. The portrait’s canvas on original stretchers measures 20” x 24” and with the lemon gilt frame, 23” x 27” approximately. This is an exceptionally well done portrait that shows well and is ready to hang and enjoy.
