Artist: (after) Sir Henry Raeburn (Scottish, 1756-1823) Title: "Portrait of Margaritta MacDonald in red jacket and white gown (half-length)" *No signature found Circa: 1820 Medium: Original Oil Painting on Canvas Framing: Framed in a gold gesso Louis XV frame Framed size: 40.25" x 34.5 Canvas size: 30" x 25" Condition: Old relining, some inpainting to chest area, alligatored surface mainly in bottom half of canvas. In otherwise very good condition A lovely work Notes: Provenance: private collection - Cleveland, OH. Bracket affixed at bottom of frame: "Sir Henry Raeburn". Old auction lot number sticker "146" and an old partial name label "-n" on verso at top. This is one of Raeburn's best-loved portraits, but virtually nothing is known of Margaritta MacDonald's personality or life. She married Robert Scott Moncrieff, an Edinburgh wine-merchant and friend of Sir Walter Scott. She died in 1824 and her husband survived her for thirty years. During this time he kept her portrait permanently in his dining-room, and never remarried. Biography: Sir Henry Raeburn FRSE RA RSA (4 March 1756 – 8 July 1823) was a Scottish portrait painter and Scotland's first significant portrait painter since the Union to remain based in Scotland. He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.
