OLD MASTERS

Encompassing centuries of change in Europe between 1300 and 1800, from booms of prosperity to bloody revolutions, Old Masters describes a wide range of artists. The informal term was derived from the title of an artist who trained in a guild long enough to become a master, such as Leonardo da Vinci, who studied in a Florence painters’ guild. However, Old Masters paintings, prints and other art is now used to refer to work made by any artist with a high level of skill in painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking who worked during this era.

The 15th century’s expansive trade and commerce spread culture across borders. A vibrant period of art emerged, bolstered by studies of anatomy and nature that influenced a new visual realism. From Raphael and Michelangelo in the Renaissance to Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer in the Dutch Golden Age, artists expressed emotion, naturalism, color and light in new ways. El Greco and Paolo Veronese were leaders in the dramatic style of Mannerism, while Caravaggio and Peter Paul Rubens demonstrated the movement and meticulous detail of Baroque art.

Historically, most attention was concentrated on male artists, but recent research and exhibitions have elevated the impactful work of women such as Rachel Ruysch and Artemisia Gentileschi. In late-18th-century France, female artists like Adélaïde Labille-Guiard and Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun were prominent names. Nevertheless, access to the academies and guilds was highly restricted for women, and even those able to establish practices were expected to adhere to portraits and still lifes rather than the grand history paintings being created by men.

Parnassus Apollo after Raffaello Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
after RAFFAELLO SANZIO (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520), The Parnassus with Apollo, the Muses and ancient and modern poets 17th-18th century Oil on canvas (123 x 173 cm - framed 137 x 187 cm.) This refined painting, of considerable size and great scenic effect, is a derivation of Raphael Sanzio's famous fresco depicting Mount Parnassus, datable to 1510-1511 and located in the Stanza della Segnatura, one of the four Vatican Rooms. The meaning of the subject was to celebrate humanistic culture, a sort of allegorical representation that saw both the figures of myth and those of the greatest authors of the past side by side in the same space. The scene, enveloped in a lyrical atmosphere, is set on Mount Parnassus, near the fountain Castalia, for Greek mythology the home of the Muses, where ancient and modern poets are depicted. The painting, which rather faithfully reproduces Raphael's piece with perfect harmony and great pictorial quality, is the work of an Italian author active between the 17th and 18th century. We can see the careful balancing of the light, which brings out its chromatic brilliance, and the accentuated sculptural relief that the author gave to the figures, as well as the very faithful rendering of the individual pictorial details of the figures. At the centre of the composition stands the main figure of the god Apollo, crowned with laurel and seated on a rocky boulder intent on playing the lyre from his arm, surrounded by the nine Muses...

Spanish school. Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, bishop of Córdoba.
Located in Firenze, IT
Portrait of Francisco de Reynoso y Baeza.   Secretary of Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos and bishop of Córdoba. Francisci de Reynoso. Early 17th century. Small-format portrait from the late Renaissance period. Spanish school. Size: Cm 19 x Cm 13.5 Oil on wooden panel. On the back the fine tablet is strengthened (already in ancient times) by a sheet of parchment. About 1600-1610. As often in Mannerist / Late Renaissance portraits, the image of the character is accompanied by the writing that runs at the top, adding a celebratory, historicising touch to the effigy. Let's bring back the sentence here: DON FRANCISCO DE REINOSO. CAMARERO SECRETO IESCALCO PIO QUINTO OBISCOPO CORDOBA. 68 (? O 7?) (1534, Autillo de Campos, Spain - 1601, Córdoba) Francisco de Reynoso was a Spanish cleric, chief chamberlain, and secretary to Pope Pius V, abbot of Husillos, and bishop of Córdoba. He was the fourth of eleven children. His father was the seventh Lord of Autillo de Campos, and his mother was Juana de Baeza y de las Casas, daughter of Manuel de Baeza, a lawyer of the Royal Council and at the Court of Valladolid. Francisco de Reynoso was deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary and showed a strong inclination toward religion and piety from an early age. He studied Latin, arts, and theology at the University of Salamanca. In 1562, he traveled to Rome with his brothers Pedro and Luis. In January 1566, following the death of Pope Pius IV, Cardinal Antonio Michele Ghislieri was elected pope, becoming Pius V. From this period until Ghislieri's death in 1572, Francisco de Reynoso served as his chief chamberlain and secretary. After Pope Pius V died, Francisco de Reynoso returned to Spain and lived for several years in the city of Palencia, where his brother Manuel was a canon. He supported the Society of Jesus when it was established in Palencia, providing alms to the school's clergy and funding chairs of Letters and Theology at his own expense, as well as donating a significant number of books. During the brief outbreak of the Black Plague...

John Ferneley Jnr Stabled horses Oil on canvas Canvas Size - 20 x 24 in Framed Size - 27 x 31 in Born in about 1815 at Melton Mowbray, he was the eldest son of the important sporting artist John E Ferneley. The latters other two children, Claude Lorraine and Sarah, were also artists. He spent his early life at Elgin Lodge and his father was a major influence on his artistic development and was in all probability his sole teacher. His father took him on trips to London and in 1832 to Durham and York where the younger Ferneley later settled in about 1839, probably because of the large number of patrons in the area. His first work, of a Whipping-in, was engraved and published in the New Sporting Magazine in May 1833 and was followed in the next year by an engraving of a Hunter. Rare ceremonial portrait of Louis de France, aged around 10, wearing rich miniature clothes following the men's fashion of his time. He is standing, turned in three quarters, his gaze with a solemn expression contrasts with his baby face with full cheeks which appears in the middle of thick blond curls falling on his shoulders. He wears a tobacco-colored cloth jacket which hides a shirt of which we only see the silver-embroidered sleeves. 18th century portrait of sisters Lady Catherine and lady Jane Brydges
By James Maubert
Located in Bath, Somerset
This large double portrait depicts the sisters Lady Catherine and Lady Jane Brydges, the daughters of John Brydges, the Marquess of Carnarvon (1703-1727). They are seated on a stone ledge within in an idealised park landscape with a stone fountain on one side and sumptuous silk drapery to the other. They hold a garland of flowers by a blue silk ribbon around a lamb seated between them, a representation of romantic pastoral simplicity which was popular in English painting at the time. Oil on canvas in a period 'Lely' panel frame with attached title plates. Canvas: 116 x 150cm (45 1/2 x 59in) Frame size: 137 x 172cm (54 x 67 1/2in) Provenance: By descent through the eldest daughter Catherine to the Hoskyns branch of the family to the present day, who by marriage were also the descendants of Sir Christopher Wren. A photograph of the painting is held in the National Portrait Gallery archive in London, dated 1955 and noted as being the property of Sir John Hoskyns, who later became a prominent politician in Thatcher's government. Catherine (1725-1807) and Jane (1727-1776) were the daughters of John Brydges, Marquess of Carnarvon, Viscount Wilton and heir apparent to the Duke of Chandos and Catherine Tollemarche, daughter of Lionel, 3rd Earl of Dysart. Their eldest daughter, Catherine, shown wearing the russet gown with a blue mantel, married firstly William Berkeley Lyon and secondly in 1753, Edwyn Francis Stanhope of Stanwell House, Middlesex, with whom she had two children, Edwyn Francis in 1754 and Catherine in 1755. Catherine Stanhope married Sir Hungerford Hoskyns, 6th Baronet of Harewood Park, Herefordshire in 1774. The younger daughter Jane Brydges, shown wearing a yellow silk gown, married her cousin, James Brydges of Pinner, but had no children. James Maubert was born in Dublin in 1666, the son of a French Huguenot. He was the pupil of Gaspar Smitz, the Dutch born artist who specialised in portraits, flowers and fruits, who came to England shortly after the Restoration in 1660 and lived in Dublin from the mid 1660's until his death in 1668. The diarist George Vertue, who knew Maubert and who relied on him as a source for certain anecdotes concerning artists that appear in his Notebooks, states ‘Mr Maubert had his first instruction in drawing and painting from him in Dublin’. Maubert worked for the Bathurst family, the Herberts and painted portraits of the Duchess of Bolton...
