ABOUT: When one thinks of the summertime, a million different smells, sights, sounds, and memories manifest. Each year, Rice curates a summertime salon show that captures this multiplicity, displaying a diversity of styles, themes, nuances, and artist techniques. For 2015, Rice has brought together the works of 51 artists mosaicking the walls of the gallery walls from floor to ceiling with nearly a hundred photographs, their various sizes, color schemes and subject matter expertly laid out to fit together like the pieces of an eclectic puzzle. Rice’s installation design is carefully orchestrated so that the individual pieces work off each other. “This is my favorite exhibit even though it takes months to curate and a week to install. It is my curatorial showcase. Visitors always linger longer than any other show; there is something for everyone. I love the moment when the viewer is first drawn to an image,” says Rice. “Sometimes it’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but also reconnects to an experience remembered.” The invitational image, “1952 Vincent Black Shadow” takes its title from the bike famed for it’s record-breaking speeds. Within the faded sepia-toned pallet the striking figure of a bikini-wearing woman is stretched horizontally, as if flying, upon this legendary motorcycle. She is juxtaposed against a background of silos shrouded in fog. She appears as if the force of the motorcycle has streamlined her body backwards. Yet in this frozen moment the motorcycle remains stationary upon a tabletop. From the photograph you gain entrée into a world of evocative images that invite you to while away the afternoon. At once modern and sentimental, playful and reflective, the exhibition is an expression of the aesthetic cultivated by the gallery for the last 25 years. It is both an opportunity to display the artists Rice has nurtured for decades, as well as a chance to invite newcomers into the gallery space. Color, Horse, Sports, Sky, Landscape, UK, England, Men

Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition of 1. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. ABOUT: For the last two years Mark and Kristen have collaborated using one of the earliest photographic methods, collodion wet plate to create ambrotypes on glass and tintypes on aluminum. They use a 1860 style view camera to create one-of-a-kind images, which become windows into an intimate, romantic, and beautiful world of faces, still lives, nudes, and landscapes. In this demanding process, the collodion coated tin or glass plates are immersed in a silver nitrate solution, and then they must be exposed in the camera and developed while still wet. Serendipitous flaws and beautiful imperfections are an inevitable part of this imprecise hands-on process. This show includes a combination of 24 tintypes and ambrotypes, which are 8x10 and smaller in size. Their intimate sizes ask the viewers to look closer and spend more time with these photographs to fully appreciate their power. — A welcome antidote to today's nonstop, ¬instantaneous imagery. Paradoxically, this intersection of past and present gives these pieces an unmistakably contemporary feel. The two collaborators deliberately play up the ambiguity of time. The nudes (some recalling E.J. Bellocq's alluring portraits of New Orleans prostitutes in 1912) are suffused with freshness and sensuality, even eroticism at times, with nearly all of them coming off as refined rather than crass. Fredrick Scott Archer developed the collodion process in 1851. Artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, William Henry Jackson and Civil War photographer Mathew Brady used the process, due to its cost and versatility advantages. In addition Sink and Hatgi’s work can also be seen revived in contemporary artists work...

  • Brooklyn Bridge I, contemporary and elegant, mixed media photography on wood
    By Hugo Garcia-Urrutia
    Located in Dallas, TX
This is a beautiful contemporary photograph of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The photograph is processed in a way that the grain of the wood eventually becomes the "canvas" and backdrop for this image. It is processed directly on Baltic birch wood using archival inks and is then sealed with a durable semi-gloss lacquer. The set is composed of 9 pieces and they are very easy to install and transport. It is a set of 25 and only 5 editions remain available. HUGO G. URRUTIA Urrutia is an interdisciplinary artist, interested in the cross-pollination between art and architecture. A graduate and active member of the Architectural Association in the United Kingdom, Urrutia’s work creates a distinct spatiality located at the interstice of art and architecture. Urrutia graduated from the Architectural Association in 2013, earning a Master of Architecture in the Design & Make programme.
