James Rosenquist
Bunraku, James Rosenquist, abstract Japanese puppetry monochrome Pop Art

1970

About the Item

This abstract monochrome print portrays large, shiny dark purple bubbles that cascade over a scribbled, dense background. The sense of movement suggests Rosenquist was influenced by the dynamic performances of Bunraku. Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppetry. Nearly life-sized, they are operated by black-cloaked puppeteers, while a narrator describes the action, and a live musician provides the soundtrack. The detail of the puppets is so great they can roll their eyes and take almost any pose. 32.5 x 23.5 in. / 82.5 x 59.7 cm Lithograph printed on Arches paper. Artist’s proof. Signed by the artist and dated 1970 lower right in pencil, numbered A/P 9/9 lower left in pencil. Catalogue reference: Constance W. Glenn Time Dust: James Rosenquist Complete Graphics 1962 - 1992, Rizzoli, New York 1993, no. 33, illustrated p. 44. • Tube James Rosenquist Black and white abstract Pop art chrome based on painting
    By James Rosenquist
    Located in New York, NY
Printed in the same scale as the original James Rosenquist painting, this black and white, abstract pop art composition features a car door collaged over a gleaming, metallic chrome circle. The shining metal and automobile imagery is characteristic of Rosenquist’s work. Bold, minimalist and monochrome, with a hint of yellow and cobalt blue, Tube's circular composition became a recurring motif for Rosenquist. Circles appear in the artist’s prints from the late 60s – he was interested in the “circles of confusion”, or the phenomenon of a camera lens being pointed directly at the sun. Lithograph based on Rosenquist’s 1963 painting...
