About the Item

Hernan Bas (b. 1978) is a critically acclaimed Miami-based artist best known for his distinct brand of expressionistic figuration that present his elaborate and mysterious narratives. Bas' body of work is steeped in rich influences, synthesizing inspiration from diverse classical references and contemporary culture. Depicting a wide range of subject matter from landscapes to contemplative portraits, Bas imagines a ruminative wonderland often serving as an inquiry into adolescence. His works often explore themes of identity and sexual awakening through the androgynous and adventurous young men who appear throughout his oeuvre. "Suicide Sunday" depicts a group of young men sitting atop a cardboard raft as they participate in a river race to commemorate the end of exam season. Half of the young men appear to be drying off in their swim trunks, while the others either steer the boat or assist a rogue teammate. A sense of leisure and camaraderie permeates the scene, highlighting their youth and lighthearted pleasure. Yet the title invites the viewer to search for something more menacing or sombre in the composition. Like the best of his work, there is a distinct voyeuristic quality that highlights the transience of this encounter, engaging the viewer in the progress of the group's journey. Bas' work is enjoyed in public collections across the globe including LACMA (Los Angeles), Saatchi Collection (London), and the Samuso: Space for Contemporary Art (Seoul), to name a few. Jim Dine was one of the key artists that defined American Pop Art in the 1960s. Like Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, Dine appropriated quintessential American images and icons. He used ubiquitous and familiar forms, like tools, food, and stylized clothing, as the basis for bold and colorful compositions inspired by Dada assemblage, Abstract Expressionism, and collage techniques. The "Heart" is the most celebrated icon in Dine's oeuvre. He uses its motif to explore pattern, color, and texture in both two-dimensions and sculpture. This is a classic and iconic example of Jim Dine's hearts from his most sought-after period. Questions about this piece? Contact us. "Dutch Hearts...
