David Hockney
Brooke Hopper David Hockney portrait drawing lithograph in black and white

About the Item

A classic David Hockney portrait, this lithograph depicts the artist's friend Brooke Hopper. Brooke Hopper, one of the Hollywood elite, is the daughter of the producer Leland Hayward and actress Margaret Sullavan, and at the time of this drawing was married to Dennis Hopper. Hockney and Hopper travelled in the same circles, often attending the same parties. Here she is pictured in a relaxed pose, with her legs crossed and one hand on her lap. Wearing a dress, her hair falls in loose waves and she gazes past the viewer. A vase of flowers decorates the background. Hockney has been an avid portraitist throughout his career, with subjects ranging from his mother and Celia Birtwell, his muse over many decades, to art dealer Larry Gagosian and artist John Baldessari. He often drew and painted his models seated in an armchair, as seen in this portrait. 38.25 x 28.1 in. / 97.2 x 71.2 cm Lithograph on on buff, mould-made Arches cover paper. Signed by the artist, dated 76, and numbered 43/92 lower left in pencil. Catalogue Reference: David Hockney: Prints 1954-1995, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo 1996, no. 166 illustrated.
