David Chamberlain
Nocturne Ed. 2/15 - smooth, polished, abstract, bronze sculpture

1981

About the Item

At once expressive and elegant, this abstract bronze sculpture is by David Chamberlain. The contemporary form is reminiscent of a half-moon shape and appears to be one continuous surface. Chamberlain’s sculptures are distinguished by this continuity of form and ingenious use of dimension where the ‘insides appear to become the outsides and vice versa.’ Each piece is designed to be turned so that every rotation reveals a different perspective. The American artist is inspired by the expressive language of music and always listens to music while creating pieces in his studio. Named for the French word, ‘Nocturnal’ or night, in musical terms this means a composition that is inspired by the night. “All my works have musical titles so that I can pay homage to that which inspires the work. It’s a lot of fun coming up with a title that hints at what’s going on with the sculpture.” David Chamberlain David Allen Chamberlain was born in Canton, Ohio in 1949. He attended Princeton University in 1971 where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. In 1977 he acquired a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. That was followed by a graduate certificate from the Teaching Studio Art Institute of Colorado College and finally a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Colorado. Over several decades, he has created more than 2000 pieces of artwork in various mediums which appear in both private collections and in art institutions, museums, and colleges around the world. This sculpture can be upscaled for the outdoors. Available on a commission basis in various sizes and in a variety of materials including bronze and steel.
