Rare and famous figurative bronze made by Susse Frères foundry was cast posthumously from the original with the family's permission in 2002. They could synthesize cubist, realism, and Classic interpretations as sculptors, painters, and fabricators. Signed by J. Martel in bronze, this is an excellent and rare piece in original condition. Martels did serious work depicting music with central installations on permanent exhibitions in France. • Lucien Charles E. Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930
    By Lucien Alliot
    Located in Oakland, CA
Lucien Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930. The brown patina on a marble base signed on the bronze L Alliot and stamped bronze on the deer. This particular piece has exceptional rhythm where the two gazelles interplay in a movement depicting leaping over the hills or water—a very three-dimensional treatment showing the movement of the animals. Lucien Charles Eduoard Alliot (1877-1967), the sculptor, was born in 1877 Paris, France. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, was a member and the gold medal in 1920, out of competition, and was a member of the sculpture jury from 1934 to 1939. Alliot was well known for his figurative sculptures, exhibited at the Salon de Paris for many years. He received a third-place award in 1907 (which included funds for travel expenses) and a first-place award l in 1920. After he declared himself out of the artistic competition, he became a jury member at the Salon evaluating sculptural works from 1934 to 1939. Alliot created several allegorical groups, La Paix in 1939, and several religious illustrations: Sacré Cœur in 1924, La Vierge Marie...

  • Broadway's in Fashion
    By Erté
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Erté, considered by many as the “Father of Art Deco,” often acknowledged that his love for the theater was a great source of creativity and inspiration. He conveyed in his art a drama with which he lived his life – a dream that came from the very innermost expression of his soul. Just like theater has two faces - comedy and tragedy - Erté was a brilliant showman, as well as a quiet man who sometimes would prefer to be left alone. From a young age, he was immersed in the world of opera, ballet, and theater. When he designed costumes and sets for theatrical productions, it was a lifelong desire that he was fulfilling. “Broadway’s in Fashion” is a fitting tribute to the legendary Broadway from a man who pursued the theatrical in everything he did. In 1978, Erté was honored by the Eugene O’Neill Foundation at a gala celebration in New York entitled “Broadway’s in Fashion” for which Erté designed the poster. This led to a CBS-TV film on Erté narrated by the legendary Diana Vreeland, and an exhibition of his costume designs at the Boston Center of the Arts. This sculpture, in scarlet and black, with white gold embellishments, incorporates the elements for which Broadway is best known. Her elegant and confident posture reveals her costume, which is itself an homage to Broadway – the scarlet robe with gold tassels evokes the stage curtain as it rises to reveal the first act, the male and female dancers, energetically giving their all for each performance, and the Greek masks of comedy and tragedy...
