Pablo Picasso Prints and Multiples

Spanish, 1881-1973

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

The Ox, 1942 (Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon, B.330)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Greenwich, CT
The Ox is an aquatint and drypoint print on chine from one of the deluxe copies of Picasso's 1942 Histoire Naturelle - Textes de Buffon series. The image size is 10.7 x 8.2 inches, unsigned as issued, and framed in a contemporary silver and gray moulding. One of about 36 prints that exist with Picasso's remarqued title in French, from the edition of 262 (there were 226 portfolios, some with additional sets on varying papers). Catalogue - Cramer #37 The exceptional etchings from Picasso’s Histoire Naturelle – Textes de Buffon are a masterful combination of sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint, showcasing a full range of gray tonalities. The etchings of animals, birds and insects are considered some of the most beautiful and most unusual examples of Picasso’s graphic work. Roger Lacourière, Picasso’s master printer, pulled the prints for each etching between 1939-1942. It was Lacourière who taught Picasso the sugar-lift aquatint technique which allowed him to mimic the effect of brushstrokes in these etched images. Picasso first explored the technique in his plates for the Vollard Suite, but it was in the creation of the Buffon images that he fully realized its stunning, painterly potential. For the edition, 226 portfolios were produced with the first thirty-six counting as deluxe compilations. These rare deluxe sets were on diverse papers (chine, japon or vergé ancien) and each included a complete additional suite showing Picasso’s title remarques along the bottom. As such, the remarqued versions of the prints are quite rare with just thirty-six of each produced for the edition (with the exception of The Wolf which is never remarqued – the image always fills the entire etching plate). These prints are based on the writings of French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who extensively documented the natural world in his monumental work Histoire Naturelle. Picasso’s association with the project to illustrate parts of the Buffon came during a tumultuous time in European history – the prelude to, and early years of, World War II. As the continent was ravaged, Picasso lived through the disaster in Paris, which the Germans occupied in 1940. These prints could be seen as a political statement – Picasso channeling his artistic expression into a form of resistance art...

Le Peintre à la Palette (Painter with Palette)
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Pablo Picasso Le Peintre à la Palette (Painter with Palette), 1963 in an intricate and detailed work that showcases the dedication the artist has to his craft and his chosen mediums. Stoic and determined, a painter is seen in this linocut hard at work. With a palette in one hand and a frenzied brush in the other, he works tirelessly to create a masterpiece. Utilizing simple shapes and lines to create complex imagery, Picasso's abstract technique takes on a multitude of layers in this work. Shapes overlap and intersect to create various textures, highlights, and shadows in the composition. Using the black against the white paper, the viewer is instantly drawn in to the image as the contrast catches the eye and transports you into the painter’s world. Created in 1963, Pablo Picasso Painter with Palette (Peintre a la palette) 1963, is a linocut on Arches paper and is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left margin. CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ: Pablo Picasso Painter with Palette (Peintre a la palette) 1963 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work): 1. Picasso 1957 original exhibition poster Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales
By Pablo Picasso
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1957 original exhibition poster titled Pâtes Blanches: Empreintes Originales éditées par Madoura et Gravures Rares by Pablo Picasso is a significant piece that reflects the artist's deep involvement with ceramic art and printmaking during that period. The poster was created to promote an exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes, France, showcasing Picasso’s ceramics and rare engravings, with a particular focus on his work with pâtes blanches, or white clay. By the late 1940s, Picasso had become increasingly involved with ceramics, producing a vast number of pieces at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The studio, owned by Georges and Suzanne Ramié, became a creative haven for Picasso, where he could explore new forms of expression beyond painting and sculpture. His work with ceramics brought forth a unique blend of classical forms and modernist abstraction, often infusing traditional pottery with his distinctive artistic style. The term pâtes blanches refers to the white earthenware clay that Picasso used for creating his ceramic pieces. This material allowed him to experiment with various textures and finishes, which he combined with his characteristic line work and engraving techniques. The poster advertises this innovative work, highlighting the original prints and rare engravings that were part of the exhibition. The exhibition at Galerie 65 in Cannes ran throughout the summer of 1957 and offered art lovers and collectors the opportunity to view and acquire some of Picasso's rarest ceramic works and prints. It was a testament to Picasso's versatility as an artist, showcasing his ability to transcend different mediums while maintaining the boldness and originality that defined his career. The poster itself, with Picasso's handwritten details and a depiction of one of his engravings, serves as both a promotional tool and a work of art in its own right. It reflects Picasso's personal touch and his deep connection to the work he produced during this period. Today, this exhibition poster remains a coveted item for collectors of Picasso’s works and 20th-century art, representing a unique moment in Picasso's extensive and varied artistic journey. ‘B1296 Madoura’ Blue and Black Linocut Print, 1961
By Pablo Picasso
Located in New York, NY
Pablo Picasso may be best known for pioneering Cubism and fracturing the two-dimensional picture plane in order to convey three-dimensional space. Inspired by African and Iberian art, he also contributed to the rise of Surrealism and Expressionism. Picasso’s sizable oeuvre grew to include over 20,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, theater sets, and costume designs. He painted his most famous work, Guernica (1937), in response to the Spanish Civil War; the totemic grisaille canvas remains a definitive work of anti-war art. At auction, a number of Picasso’s paintings have sold for more than $100 million. The indefatigable artist has been the subject of exhibitions at the world’s most prestigious institutions, from the Museum of Modern Art and Centre Pompidou to the Stedelijk Museum and Tate Modern. Published by Galerie Madoura and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris. This work is hand-signed by the Artist in pencil in the lower right margin. ID #W-5615 . Baer, Brigitte. One interesting fact about Pablo Picasso is that the artist was extremely prolific, producing more than 150,000 works during the course of his life. Although known by just “Picasso,” his full name is actually 35 words long: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso. Police once thought he was responsible for stealing the Mona Lisa, and ironically, more Picasso paintings have been reported as missing or stolen than those of any other artist in history. Before he died at the age of 91, Picasso reportedly said, "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink anymore," and his parting words inspired Paul McCartney to write the song "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)." No, Pablo Picasso was not truly an abstract artist, in the opinion of experts. While he did help to shift art away from naturalistic forms toward abstraction with his Cubist pieces, most of his works weren't purely abstract. A good example of this is his well-known Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. In this painting, the female figures are abstracted, but you can still tell that the forms represent the human body. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Pablo Picasso art.
