About the Item

A modernist silver plate and crystal caviar serving bowl, dish, or chiller designed by French silversmith Ercuis in the 1970s. Sophisticated design with a streamlined geometric shape, featuring a rounded silver-plated metal ice container with handles and a small crystal caviar bowl insert with a lid. There are no visible hallmarks on the set the marking was probably a sticker that was removed. This set is still in its original branded storage box. Measurements: Overall: 8.25 in. wide (21 cm) x 7.07 in. deep (18 cm) x 3.94 in. high (10 cm). The small caviar bowl with lid is 3.57 in. diameter (9 cm) x 3.57 in. high (9 cm). Gift box: 7.88 in. wide (20 cm) x 7.88 in. deep (20 cm) x 4.32 in. high (11 cm). About: Adrien Celeste Pillon, parish priest of the small village of Ercuis located in the Oise Department, 50 km north of Paris, founded in 1867 a company of artistic silversmith, enamels in relief, copper plating, silver plating, gilding, and clover work which developed rapidly. A worker's estate is built, and labor flows in. In 1880 Ercuis opened a boutique in Paris and abandoned religious silverware in favor of table silverware. The village developed considerably around the factory and its workers' town. From 1888 the manufacture of cutlery develops considerably alongside table silverware. The hotel industry is becoming a clientele of prime importance. Ercuis has been present since the beginning of the 20th century in the major hotels of the French Riviera and the Basque coast. 1908 was a period of growth for the brand, which was exported to Europe and around the Mediterranean sea. After the halt to growth caused by World War I, manufacturing resumed in 1919 at its pre-war pace. The period between the two wars was characterized by a great creative impulse and by the use of advertising as a promotional tool. The major international exhibitions of 1925, 1931, and 1937 fostered a proliferation of new creations in both shapes and materials, with precious wood and metal combination. In 1935, Ercuis was asked by the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique to equip the tourist class of the oceanliner, Normandy. 1939-1945, the Second World War reproduced the same situation as during the First War: activity slowed down due to rationing and occupation. After the war, the brand slowly rebuilt itself. It participated in several international fairs and equipped the oceanliner France in 1962. From the 1970s, creation turned to more contemporary forms. In 1978, the entry of Ercuis into the Colbert Committee, which brings together the biggest names in French luxury, attests to the central place that the brand occupies in the circle of French luxury players. In 1981, Ercuis produced for the revival of the Orient Express an original line of silverware in the spirit of luxury and distinction of the 1920s, still used today on board the legendary train symbol of romanticism and adventure. In the 1980s, Ercuis acquired another famous French silversmith, Ravinet Denfert. In 2002, Joel Robuchon, the famous French chef, chose Ercuis to equip his restaurants worldwide in Paris, London, New York, Las Vegas, and Tokyo. Since the 2000s, the opening of many palaces in Paris and around the world confirms the privileged place of Ercuis silverware in the luxury hotel industry.
