About the Item
The Starry Sky is one of the most iconic designs of Paavo Tynell's lamps. It was made by both Taito and Idman in many different sizes. The way the light filters through the grill and the holes on the sides makes the ceiling look like a starry sky. Because of it's timeless and sophisticated look this lamp is suitable for any interior. The lamp is in original condition. Because of it's size, this lamp suits even bigger rooms, like living rooms or bedrooms. Although it is often found in corridors and hallways. This lamp is not stamped, but it looks more like a 1950s lamp than the earlier Taito lamps.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a finnish designer who is well renowned around the world for his incredible lighting fixtures and lamps. Tynell is known as the man who “illuminated Finland” and his works can be found on numerous public offices and buildings such as the Finnish Parliament House and the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. Tynells ability to breathe life into his work has been almost unparalleled to this day.

Paavo Tynell
Paavo Tynell, who was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1890, started his career as a tin- and blacksmith at the company Kory Oy. Simultaneously, he studied at the Helsinki University of Industrial Arts, from which he graduated as a master craftsman in 1913. In 1918, Tynell co-founded the metalwork and lighting company Oy Taito Ab. At first, the company focused mostly on interior and exterior metalwork, such as statues and railings. Later, during the 1930s, Taito also began producing lamps for the lighting sector. Both Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck would design works for the company.
