About the Item

Beautiful pair of French Art Nouveau nightstands or bedside tables by Gauthier- Ponsignon, Ecole de Nancy. These excellent quality pieces are made of solid walnut and feature their original marble tops. Recently refinished using French polish masterfully applied by our in house "ebeniste" graduate from Ecole Boulle in Paris. These stunning, very pure Art Nouveau pieces are part of a bedroom set that we also have to offer. The hardware from the bedroom set are stamped, photos provided upon request. The craftsman Camille Gauthier a furniture designer born September 3, 1870 in Norroy-lès-Pont-à-Mousson and died in 1963 in Montricoux. He took classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and, in 1891, the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. He started at Majorelle in 1893 as a draftsman at the design office. His arrival precedes the participation of the firm in the Exhibition of Decorative Art Lorrain Galeries Poirel of Nancy in 1894 which will decide Louis Majorelle to move towards a renewed style, parallel to its production of furniture historicizing in Martin varnish. Camille Gauthier marquetry panels often draw their inspiration from the naturalist repertoire or propose narrative subjects, conceived as true pictorial compositions. These principles are applied in a series of beautiful furniture created for the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900 and contribute to the success met by the Majorelle House. It was at this time, in July 1900, that Camille Gauthier decided to leave the Majorelle House in order to establish himself on his own by founding a company whose aim was to manufacture and sell furniture and works of art. He settled at 8 rue d'Auxonne in Nancy. Like Emile Gallé and Louis Majorelle, he mechanized his studio, which allowed him to create furniture but keeping a naturalistic decor. In 1901, he appears on the Steering Committee of the School of Nancy. In order to develop his business, Camille Gauthier made the decision around 1904 to partner with Auguste Poinsignon. In 1924, Camille Gauthier, who remained solely responsible for the company after the death of Auguste Poinsignon, sold the company to Charles Delfour, whose production and distribution by catalogs operated under the name of Gauthier-Poinsignon.
