20th Century Carlo Scarpa Set of Six Chairs mod. Kentucky

About the Item

Carlo Scarpa (1906- 1978) was an Italian architect and designer heavily influenced by the history of Venetian culture, materials and landscape. in 1926 obtained his diploma of Professor in Architectural Drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Venice. He then began his career at the Royal Superior Institute of Architecture of Venice (successively Architectural Institute of Venice University) as assistant to Prof. G. Cirilli. He possessed an exceptional understanding of raw materials, and from 1933 to 1947, was artistic director of Venini - one of the most prominent producers of Venetian glass before he began the pursuit of his career as an architect. Scarpa's architecture manages to respect the old and historic while simultaneously introducing new and modern design details. In this respect his work is deeply sensitive to the changes of time, all taking shape in a careful selection and combination of materials. Here six chairs with wood structure and leather, designed by Carlo Scarpa and produced by Bernini, in Italy, in the 1979.

  • 20th Century Carlo Scarpa Venini Lattimo Vase "a Mezza Filigrana", 50s
    By Carlo Scarpa, Venini
    Located in Turin, Turin
In 1921 Venini and Cappellin opened a glass factory called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. on the islands of Murano, the historic glass production centre in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. With Luigi Ceresa and Emilio Hochs as investors, they arranged to purchase the recently closed Murano glass factory of Andrea Rioda, hire the former firm's glassblowers, and retain Rioda himself to serve as technical director of the venture. Venini embarked on collaborations with architects and designers such as Cini Boeri, Tomaso Buzzi, Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Tapio Wirkkala, Gae Aulenti, and Massimo Vignelli. The ethos was to "take the Murano tradition of glass blowing and combine it with the French fashion industry's tradition of using designers". Here you can see a small lattimo vase "a mezza filigrana" realized by Venini on Carlo Scarpa...

    Located in Lonigo, Veneto
Carlo Scarpa "1934" dining chair for Bernini, walnut and reddish brown leather, Italy, 1977, set of six. Initially designed for Scarpa's own Venetian house in 1934, this model came up to production only in 1977. This chair demonstrates his architectural attitude toward furniture design. The sophisticated and right-angled base contrasts with the backrest essentiality, further enriched by its curvaceous shapes. A remarkable detail is an open cut on the back that diverges at the bottom, resulting in an unusual yet genuine form. Although an apparent disharmonic look is created, these details enhance the chair's elegance. We can do custom restoration and special reupholstering. Our atelier guarantees the excellence of Italy through the traditional art of craftsmanship. We do offer a dedicated customization service thanks to our team of expert craftsmen and artisans.
