While little is known about the daring modernist designers Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet, the French-Swiss husband and wife duo created playful and unique decorative objects, dining room chairs, sconces and other furniture during from the mid-20th century. Rejecting the lavishness of Art Deco and the concept that seats, tables and other furniture should be made with luxurious and exotic materials, Minet and Audoux adopted a rustic style in their work, incorporating abaca, hemp rope and other organic materials such as beech and bamboo in their provocative designs. Audoux and Minet were active on the Côte d'Azur, France - it is believed that they established a workshop there in the late 1920s. The designers were members of the Union des Artistes Modernes, an artists' collective like-minded founded in 1929. Union's raison d'être was to design furniture and decorative items for more people, not just affluent Parisians - a type of target buyer for many creators of the time. They advocate simplicity and prioritize functionalism. The collective counts other famous furniture designers among its members, including Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Francis Jourdain and Louis Sognot. Minet and Audoux spent much of their time in the Provence region, a center of creativity where other artists such as Pablo Picasso found endless inspiration. They created everything from lighting to lounge chairs and side tables, which reflect a nautical theme and coastal lifestyle. Minet and Audoux's imaginative works - table lamps with raffia-covered lampshades, oak benches with woven rope backs - were made available to passers-by at the duo's outlet in the seaside resort of Golfe- Juan. The couple also incorporated braided rope into larger pieces such as armchairs and side tables. This furniture is often compared to the work of Charlotte Perriand, member of the Union of Modern Artists, who demonstrated the same audacity. Several of Audoux and Minet's seats are on display at Maison Dumas in Saint-Tropez, France.
