About the Item

HODGKIN, Howard and Susan SONTAG. The Way We Live Now. 33 pp. Illustrated with four hand-coloured aquatints by Howard Hodgkin. 8vo., bound in paper-covered boards, in the original dust jacket and new yellow cloth folding box. London: Karsten Schubert, 1991. $2500.00 The Way We Live Now is a special work of art, a unique collaboration between two great artists. Sontag's literary classic was written after a close friend had been diagnosed with AIDS: "I had to write and it all just came out in a rush... It seemed that the whole of my life had prepared me to write like that." The story is about living with illness, and Sontag creates a tangled tapestry of emotions. Despite its tragic subject, the resulting work achieves an optimistic effect, which strongly repudiates the traditional horror and fear. One of 200 copies, signed by Sontag and Hodgkin, and without the extra loose lithograph as is almost always the case.

Akron: The Emily H. Davis Art Gallery of The University of Akron, [1976]. $ 2500.00 First Edition. Printed in a limited edition. The artist John Baldessari juxtaposes three images in a triptych format. Each page repeats the use of the same two portraits: an young man on the left and and an older man on the right. The center image then creates the crucial dialogue between the other two - Baldessari makes use of a variety of objects that could all be used as murder weapons - some a bit more mundane than others: a kitchen knife...
