About the Item

Very rare crewel work artwork of a sailing ship with two sailboats decorated above the main vessel. Most likely American. Done in a primitive, naive style. Circa 1875 and in very good original condition. Unknown maker. Under glass. In original birds eye maple frame. Overall framed measurements are 17 by 18.5 inches. Provenance: A Long Island, New York estate. Crewel embroidery, or crewelwork, is a type of surface embroidery using wool. A wide variety of different embroidery stitches are used to follow a design outline applied to the fabric. The technique is at least a thousand years old. Wikipedia

    This large oil on canvas painting by Adam Springfield depicts the Battle of Ptolemais which took place in 1191. It is signed lower left and dated 1877. The verso of the painting contains the title of the painting. It has it's original period gold leaf frame and measures 44 x 63.75 inches. The siege of Ptolemais is unique in the history of the Crusades since the Frankish besiegers were themselves besieged, by Saladin's troops.
