Anastessia Bettas
Study for Venus, pink, turquoise, and white encaustic wax abstract painting

2022

About the Item

Anastessia Bettas is a Canadian encaustic painter. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. The molten mix is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, built up in layers, and or scratched back to reveal colors below. Anastessia writes "I am intrigued by landscapes where natural and human made surfaces converge, depict history and contain numerous phases of existence. I use grid motifs and aerial perspectives to evoke topography, the notion of journeys and migration and to create a connection between celestial views and the ground below. By removing a sense of gravity and heaviness, the illusion of viewing images from above provides a feeling of empowerment and freedom – freedom from; freedom to; and freedom to be. My intention is to provide visceral opportunities for the viewer and encourage an emotional narrative by creating a sense of weightlessness to feel freedom and elation through the use of form and space with references to the wonders and beauty of nature and the built environment".

Shades of dark magenta and purple contrast with rich creams in this abstract composition. Paint has been built up in layers and then sanded back to reveal the history of the piece, and to create a surface full of depth and visual interest. The bold mark-making and shapes bring a lively contrast. The work is presented in a natural wood tray frame, not a wide border frame as in the in situ photos.
