Antonio Vangelli
Untitled - Mixed by Antonio Vangelli - 1998

1998

About the Item

Untitled is an original contemporary artwork realized by the Italian artist Antonio Vangelli in 1998. Original mixed media artwork. Titled, dated and hand-signed by the artist on the back. Hand-signed by the artist on the lower left corner: Vangelli. Excellent conditions. Beautiful mixed media work depicting an abstract composition, maybe a landscape. The work expresses a great sense of fantastic and joy thanks to the use of the lively deep blue that contrasts with the other colors. The artist loves the theme of the fantastic and the circus with its dances and its games: indeed he has used this theme in its art and poetic along his career. "Antonio Vangelli's painting has always seemed to be touched by this particular kind of grace: a perennial research for the visual and musical accord between signs and colors, between ringing notes and more restful peaceful traits, between nervous thrills of the pictorial gesture and great quiet". This contemporary work has been realized by Antonio Vangelli (Rome, 1917 - Rome, 2003), an Italian painter and artist. Under his father and his brothers, he began his career in painting in 1938. In 1943, he took part to the IV Quadrenniale of National Art at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. He matured in the "Roman School" from 1943 together with the painters Giulio Turcato and Emilio Vedova. His exhibition activity began in 1943 with his participation in the IV Quadrenniale of National Art. In 1948 he was present at the V Quadrenniale of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome for the "National Review of Figurative Arts". In 1953, he exhibited in Rome at Palazzo Venezia for the Marzotto Prize. In 1961, he exhibited at the "Le jardin des arts" art gallery in Rome; in 1965, he was present at the IX National Quadrenniale of Art in Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

mixed media on paper 13 x 9 inches unframed 23.25 x 19.25 inches framed Rundorff Smith deals with central shapes that she develops by referencing urns, shrines, burial mounds and places of veneration. As a current resident of South Carolina, she associates cemeteries, particularly locations in the South, as spiritual spaces of veneration. Her paintings are reliquaries for memories. Urns are vessels to hold ashes while also acknowledging life—what we mourn and what we celebrate. In the exhibition at SEFA Hudson, Rundorff Smith presents the latest in her series entitled “Trophy.” These small scale encaustic paintings are hung in a grid that mirrors the geometric patterns within each piece. The artist works in layers by melting and combining pigmented wax to create a literal history on the materials’ surface, while simultaneously implying the personal story that each vessel is meant to hold. Rendered in colored wax from sky blue to bright pink to vibrant yellow—a rectangular pattern blankets many of the paintings. This patternation references the constructions of Rundorff Smith’s father, a builder. Thus, the “Trophy” paintings...
