Alfred Munnings
Alfred Munnings was born on 8th October 1878 at Mendham Mill, Mendham, Suffolk, across the River Waveney from Harleston in Norfolk to Christian parents. His father was the miller and Munnings grew up surrounded by the activity of a busy working mill with horses and horse-drawn carts arriving daily. After leaving Framlingham College at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a Norwich printer, designing and drawing advertising posters for the next six years, attending the Norwich University of the Arts in his spare time. When his apprenticeship ended, he became a full-time painter. The loss of sight in his right eye in an accident in 1898 did not deflect his determination to paint, and in 1899 two of his pictures were shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He painted rural scenes, frequently of subjects such as Gypsies and horses. Munnings was associated with the Newlyn School of painters, and there he met Florence Carter-Wood, a young horsewoman and painter. They married on 19th January 1912, but she tried to kill herself on their honeymoon and did so in 1914. Munnings bought Castle House, Dedham, in 1919, describing it as "the house of my dreams." He used the house and adjoining studio extensively throughout the rest of his career, and it was opened as the Munnings Art Museum in the early 1960s, after Munnings's death. He was elected president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1944, was made a Knight Bachelor in the same year, and was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1947 New Year Honors. Munnings died at the Castle House, Dedham, Essex, on 17th July 1959. The village pub in Mendham is named after him, as is a street there. His immensely popular sporting artworks have enjoyed popularity in the United States as well as the United Kingdom and elsewhere. During his lifetime, some of Munnings's works were purchased by the wealthiest collectors of the day. In 2007, his Red Prince Mare sold for $7,848,000.

- Enormous 19th Century British Sporting Horses & Hounds Hunting Oil PaintingBy Charles Augustus Henry LutyensLocated in London, GBCharles Augustus Henry LUTYENS (1829 – 1915, British) On the Scent c.1880 Unframed 50 x 84 inches Framed 64 x 98 inches Oil on Canvas Signed Provenance: Possibly commissioned by George William Coventry, 9th Earl of Coventry (1838-1930); thence by family descent; Croome Court House Sale, Worcestershire 1948 Lord Coventry was a keen huntsman having founded the North Cotswold Hunt in 1867 and in 1882 The Croome. Besides founding two Hunts, he also held the unique distinction of owning racehorses that won two Grand Nationals in consecutive years. Daphne Moore, the hunting correspondent writing about the Croome Hounds c.1950, emphasised the influence of Rambler as a perfect type of hound. ‘Who could have dreamed that in 1949 well-bred hounds in almost every kennel in England would have at least a trace of Rambler’s blood in their veins?’ … to the hound man The Croome and the name Coventry immediately recalls Rambler. Anyone who has seen his portrait by Lutyens, will remember him as being the perfect type of hound for any country…’ Charles Lutyens the artist spent his early adult life in the Army, joining the 20th foot and siled with them in 1850 to serve in Canada. - C19th Portrait Princesse de Joinville of Brazil - Spectacular fit for a palaceBy Henri d'Ainecy MontpezatLocated in London, GBPortrait of Princess de Joinville riding a Bay Horse Henri d’Aincy, Le Comte Monpezat (French 1817-1859) Painted circa 1837-9 oil on canvas 113 x 92 inches (including frame) 92 x 70 inches (unframed) Provenance – from a private royal collection This magnificent portrait depicts Princess de Joinville, the daughter of Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil and the King of Portugal. Through her illustrious family she was directly related Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia and the Russian royal family, as well as to many of the great ruling families of Europe. The work clearly confirms Monpezat as one of the most accomplished equestrian portrait painters in France in the early nineteenth century. In terms of scale, quality and dramatic power, it must surely be considered amongst his finest works. The stance of the powerful thoroughbred - in half rear - emphasises the calm nature and courage of the Princess. Francisca of Brazil (1824-98) married a son of Louis Philippe I, the King of the French, and had three children. Born at the Imperial Palace of Saint Christopher, her youngest brother was the future Pedro II...Category
