Glasgow Boys.
Alexander Ignatius Roche studied at Glasgow School of Art before travelling to Paris, where he was a pupil of Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. During this time, he painted with the Scottish colony of artists at Grez-sur-Loing. On his return to Scotland, he became associated with the Glasgow Boys, a group of young artists who challenged traditional allegorical Scottish painting through their use of Impressionist colour, technique and subject matter. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
He took part in a great many group exhibitions, including: from 1889, at the Royal Academy, London; and from 1892, at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. He was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
