About the Item

This artwork "Woman with Roses" is an oil painting on hardboard by noted American artist Katherine Gillespie, 1878-1945. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The artwork size is 13.5 x 11.5 inches, framed size is 18.25 x 16.25 inches. Custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with fabric and gold liner. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Born in Crawford County, MO on March 15, 1878. Katherine Miller was listed as an artist in the San Jose City Directory of 1900 and soon thereafter married Harvey Gillespie. She was a close friend and painting partner of artist Bertha Stringer Lee and served as maid of honor at Bertha's wedding. After attending the CSFA for three years, she continued there as an instructor from 1915-18. During the early 1930s she taught garden sculpture at the Western Women's Club. Mrs. Gillespie died in San Francisco on Sept. 13, 1945. Her small easel paintings include garden scenes, floral still life, and scenes of the San Francisco Bay area. One of her best works is a mural in the Children's Ward at UC Hospital in San Francisco.

About the artist: Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1856, Frank joseph Girardin began his art instruction in 1870 under Frank Noble and later Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. A semi-pro baseball player in Cincinnati, he was best known for his beautiful landscapes of both Indiana and California. An extremely active participant in the development of the Art Association of Richmond and original member of the local Sketch Club, he served on the Board of Directors of Art Association for several years. He was considered ranked next to the late John E. Bundy in talent and skill by the former Art Association Director, Mrs. Ella Bond Johnston. Frederick Carl Frieseke was a member of the third generation of American painters to inhabit and find inspiration from Giverny, France. His use of bright colors and light, to depict the female figure, defined the style of the Giverny group during his residence, synthesizing aspects of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in the United States, Frieseke studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. In 1898, he moved to Paris to enroll in the Académie Julian, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. During this time, Frieseke also briefly studied with James A. Whistler, who would prove to be a great inspiration in Frieseke’s early works. From Whistler, Frieseke adopted a tonalist palette and a decorative approach to figurative painting. Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris.
