The Newtown Pippin, a variety of apple tree, originated in Queens, New York and by the late 18th century Pippin orchards could be found throughout the state including in Long Island and the Hudson River Valley.
A native of West Perry, New York, Lemuel Maynard Wiles pursued a career in teaching at the New York State Normal School in Albany, where he graduated in 1847. He taught briefly in schools including the Lyons Union School and the Albany Academy before opening the Select School for Boys in Buffalo in 1851. In 1849, during his early teaching years, Wiles began his formal artistic education under William Hart and Jasper Francis Cropsey.
Following the birth of his son, the artist Irving Ramsay Wiles, the family moved to New York City. Within a year, Wiles exhibited his first painting at the National Academy. In 1888, Wiles returned to Perry and opened the Silver Lake Art School, a summer art school. The artist and his family would spend their winters in New York City and their summers on Silver Lake.
During his lifetime, Wiles exhibited regularly at the Brooklyn Art Association, the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
