This superbly painted and humorous work by Walter Dendy Sadler depicts three older gentleman accidently arriving at the same time in front of a widow’s house. Clearly embarrassed, two of the gentlemen are trying to conceal the gifts they have brought whilst the third strides confidently around with a brace of pheasants. Meanwhile the lady in question, perhaps having got wind of their imminent visit seems to have bid a hasty retreat inside. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889 and received critical acclaim at the time. It was later reproduced as a popular etching.
Walter Dendy Sadler was a renowned English painter and illustrator known for his captivating depictions of domestic scenes and genre paintings. He was born in Dorking, Surrey on 12 May, 1854 to John Dendy Sadler, a solicitor and his wife Kitty Sadler (née Weller). He attended school in nearby Horsham and became interested in drawing. His artistic talent became apparent at an early age and he was given art lessons locally most likely with his sister Kate Sadler (1856-1925) who became a floral artist.
Determined to become a painter, at the age of 16 he enrolled at Heatherly's School of Art in London. In 1871, he left England for Germany where he studied in Dusseldorf under Wilhelm Simmler (1840-1923). After returning to England in 1872, he began exhibiting at the Dudley Gallery and also found work as an illustrator for various magazines and publications. His illustrations often depicted scenes of everyday life which went on to inspire a passion for genre painting. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1873 becoming a regular contributor there for over 30 years. Sadler was particularly interested in capturing the intimate moments of domestic life. His ability to convey emotions and narratives through his art became his trademark, earning him a significant reputation in the art community.
He married Amelia Louisa Pratt, the daughter of the artist Edward Pratt on 30 March 1881 at St Mary’s Church, Sunbury on Thames. Together they lived at 28 Finchley Road, London and went on to have 5 children. Sadler continued living on the Finchley Road until 1897, when he moved to River View, Hemingford Grey, Huntingdon. However, his family life was rocked by scandal when he divorced his wife in 1899. Despite this, he continued to paint and remained in Huntingdon for the rest of his life.
Sadler passed away on the 13th November, 1923, leaving behind a rich legacy of artistic excellence and a body of work that continues to resonate with audiences to this day. His works are held by numerous public art collections and galleries including: Burton Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Grundy Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery Manchester Art Gallery, Norris Museum, Tate, Touchstones Rochdale, Towneley Hall Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery.

The winged infants are shown holding rose blooms as they rest on a cloud. Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born in 1829 the son of Charles Lutyens, who was the Deputy Commissary General of the Forces and Frances Jane Fludger. With his family connection to the military it was no surprise that he joined the army in 1848 as Ensign, serving in the 20th Foot Regiment in Montreal, Canada. Whilst there, he met Mary Teresa Gallwey, daughter of Major Gallwey of Ireland and sister of Thomas Gallwey, the Governor of Montreal. They married on 28 November, 1852 and the couple went on to have 14 children in total. He returned to England having been promoted to Captain and lived in Hampshire where was appointed Instructor of Musketry to the regiment. He retired from the army in 1855, moving to London in the same year where he lived at 4 Allen Terrace, Kensington. He began pursuing an artistic career and most likely took art and sculpture lessons as well as studying animal anatomy. He made his debut at the British Institution from 1860 and by 1861 was living at 6 Palace Garden Terraces in Kensington. In 1862, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, where he continued to exhibit regularly until 1903. He initially painted portraits but then developed his subjects to include animals, usually horses and hunting scenes. Many of the people in his paintings were notable horse owners such as King Edward and the Duke of Westminster as well as military figures. He is known to have sculpted clay models of animals which he used during his creative process. He also produced a number of scenes with cherubs which he became well known for. By 1865, he had moved to 16 Onslow Square...Category

- 19th Century seascape oil painting of Douglas Harbour, Isle of ManBy William Edward WebbLocated in Nr Broadway, WorcestershireWilliam Edward Webb British, (1862-1903) Douglas Harbour, Isle of Man Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 21.5 inches x 37.5 inches Size including frame: 33 inches x 49 inches A busy quayside painting by William Edward Webb of Douglas Harbour on the Isle of man. Fishermen in boats can be seen preparing to head ashore as other figures make their way along the quayside. William Edward Webb was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1862 to William Benjamin Webb and Ellen Butler. His father was a printer and an artist and it is highly likely he received tuition from him. Following the death of his mother, his father remarried and moved the family to Manchester sometime after 1871. By the 1880’s, Webb had started working as an artist and later set up a studio at 30 Exchange Buildings in Manchester. He began exhibiting at the Manchester City Art Gallery from 1890, where he showed more than 60 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 1892. He married Clara Foster in 1899 and the couple lived at 1 Sylvan Grove, Chorlton Upon Medlock in South Manchester with their daughter Florrie. He became friends with the artist Walter Emsley (1860-1938) who also lived in Manchester. Although he spent the rest of his life in Manchester, Webb travelled throughout the UK painting coastal and marine scenes around the main ports and harbours. He spent a great deal of time in the Isle of Mann painting numerous scenes along the coast including views of Peel and Douglas Harbour, subjects he frequently returned to. Webb painted in a highly distinctive style; loose and informal but which manages to retain the sense of perspective. He struggled with ill health and depression throughout his life which sadly led to his suicide 9 November, 1903. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition was held at The Old Customs House and Old Solent House in Lymington, which brought a new found interest in his work. His paintings are now highly sought after and are represented in many collections and Museums including the Astley Hall...Category
