Charles Edouard Frère
Antique landscape oil painting of horses ploughing a field, horses in landscape

1870's

About the Item

Antique landscape oil painting by French artist, Charles Edouard Frère (1837-1894), signed in the bottom right with a dedication, 'a l'amiable Grimaldi'. This wonderful old painting from the mid 1800's is a delight, it is said that Frère would paint any landscape as long as he could include horses. Here, the horses are ploughing the field, encouraged by their owner. It's on a smooth wood board and shows believable hues of the French countryside, a clear blue sky under which the animated horses labour, a captivating and traditional French school painting of the impressionist genre. Charles was born on 10 July 1837, in Paris, he died 3 November 1894 at Ecouen. Tragically killed when falling from a galloping horse. He was a painter of genre scenes, landscapes, landscapes with figures, animals, particularly horses. Charles was the son of Pierre-Edouard Frère and nephew of Théodore Frère. He studied initially under his father, and then under Thomas Couture and Alexandre Defaux, before going on to exhibit at the Paris Salon from 1861 to 1893. Antique French impressionist riverscape/landscape oil painting on wood board in a gilt frame, unsigned (see below). This is a typical and charming late 19th Century French impressionist oil painting of a woman reading on the bank of a river. This lively landscape interpretation has been deftly applied on a canvas board by the artist using a small couteau and brushes. Some areas of elevation created with impasto thickened oils and dashes of paint give this painting animation. The light travels in from the bottom right to contrast with the dark hues of the thick riverbank vegetation.
