A fine painting of the Villa Germania which stood on the grounds of the famous Kurhaus of Davos in Switzerland. Wealthy patients would lodge in the luxurious Villa as they received their treatments in the close by Kurhaus. However, a few years after this painting was created, the Villa Germania burnt down, so here a rare indeed, detailed image of past glory with elegant figures promenading on a sunny day in the clean fresh air of the Grison mountains.
Ferdinand Sommer, a 19th century prolific veduta painter based in Thun Switzerland, well known for his romantic depictions of Switzerland's famous mountains, dramatic valleys, and waterfalls which he would sell to collectors visiting Switzerland from all over the world. In 1868 he accepted the world famous Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (1853 – 1918) as his apprentice and introduced young Hodler to the fine art of painting.
