Joseph THORS A very attractive piece by Joseph Thors who was one of the most sought after artists of the Victorian period. Perfect for any mantlepiece it has many of the most desirable facets of the English countryside with a duck pond and the beautifully painted reflections, a fisherman, a beautiful distance and almost three-dimensional quality that he has created the trees. An artist at the peak of his profession. Oil on Canvas Canvas Size: 20 x 50" (50 x 76cm) Outside Frame Size: 28 x 38" (71 x 97cm) Free Shipping Flourished 1863 – 1900 Landscape painter who lived in London but also worked in the Midlands where he is regarded as a member of the Birmingham School. He exhibited mostly at the Suffolk Street Gallery and the Royal Academy from 1863 – 1878 and also at the British Institution. His landscapes are usually rustic scenes with cottages, figures and animals in a style ultimately derived from the Norwich School. Naturalistic landscape painting was the fundamental aim of both the Norwich and Birmingham Schools. Thors was quite prodigious in his output. Thors was a draughtsman of peaceful little spots of nature, with their little hidden homesteads and winding paths, which he represents, in a refined and contemplative mood.
