Doris Lyons Hoover (American, 1927-2014) was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1927, on her grandparents' farm. She was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and attended college at the University of Chattanooga, (now UTC) where she received honors in ar. At U.C. she met her husband Jack Hoover, and the couple moved to Palo Alto in 1954. Doris Hoover became a nationally known fabric artist, teacher, lecturer and co-founder of the Peninsula Stitchery Guild, a leading organization in the Bay Area Crafts Movement of the 1970s. An impressionistic painting of a landscape. Thick loose brushstrokes of green represent the healthy foliage of summer. A blue body of water behind the trees reflects the brightness of the blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds. The sunny summer day is visible in the background while the viewer is positioned where there is shade, as seen by the shadows on the green grass of the foreground. Most recently, she was selected for the 2015 BP Portrait Award Show at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the 2016 Outwin Boochever Award at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”.
