Artist Biography -
Kevans’ paintings reflect her interests in power, manipulation and the role of the individual in inherited belief systems. She looks at alternative histories and how they relate to current issues and creates what she describes as ‘anti-portraits’ that may or may not be based on real documentation. She believes that, as her work is concept driven, sometimes the actual similarity to the person depicted in the work is irrelevant. This can be seen in her 'Boys' series which is not about portraying dictators as they really looked as children but rather about the notion of the ‘innocent child’ which has influenced images of children in art since the Victorian times. Kevans believes that a person’s identity is not preset but is a shifting temporary construction and her work questions our verdicts on history and perceptions of intellectual solidity.

Known for the originality of her ideas as well as the deftness and beauty of her brushstrokes, since 2004 Kevans has produced multiple series of portraits with provocative historical, social, or political concepts. Kevans’ place in the British art world started at art school when her series, “Boys”, was bought by Charles Saatchi from her 2004 Central St. Martins School of Art degree show. The series was subsequently exhibited in its entirety at the Saatchi Gallery as part of the exhibition “Paper”. Kevans has exhibited in group shows at leading museums including the Barbican Art Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Grand Palais, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and the Marres Centre for Contemporary Art in Maastricht. Her work can be found in major collections, including the Pallant House Gallery, the David Roberts Collection, 21c Museum, as well as in the collections of Lord Rothermere, Marc Quinn, and Jean Pigozzi.

Alec Soth Monica, Warsaw. 2018 Image size: 24 x 20 inches Frame size: 27 x 23 x 2 inches Edition 10 of 30 Signed on artist signature label Artist biography - (American, b.1969) is a photographer who is best known for photographing the Midwestern United States. He lives in Minneapolis, MN, which is also the city of his birth, although he relocated to Bronxville, NY, for his studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Soth's early work include a self-published book of portrait and landscape photographs entitled Sleeping by the Mississippi, which was the result of his travels along the Mississippi River. This book won him much attention from art critics, who said that his photographs conveyed a strong sense of intimacy with the landscape. His photograph Charles, which shows a man standing on the roof of his house with a model airplane in each hand, was used as a poster for the 2004 Whitney Biennial show, in which Soth's works were exhibited. Soth, who was extremely shy during childhood and adolescence, was driven to start photographing people after being influenced by the work of portrait photographer Diane Arbus. He has said in interviews that he feels awkward approaching people and asking to take their photographs, and that he feels drawn to loners, hermits, and travelers as the subjects of his work. After his initial success with Sleeping by the Mississippi, Soth went on to publish a second photography book in 2006 entitled Niagara. For this work, he photographed people and places around Niagara Falls. He has since then produced two more books, Last Days of W and From Here to There: Alec Soth's America. He has also produced commissioned work for The New York Times Magazine. Soth's work is included in a number of permanent collections, including those at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He is represented by the Weinstein Gallery...Category
