Michael Kenna
Irving Park Tree, Study 2, Portland, Oregon, USA by Michael Kenna, 2004

2004

About the Item

Irving Park Tree, Study 2, Portland, Oregon, USA by Michael Kenna presents a sublime scene. A single tree stands alone in the park, framed by the bright leaves on the tree and scattered on the ground. More trees are seen in the distance, slightly obscured by the foggy atmosphere. Irving Park Tree, Study 2, Portland, Oregon, USA by Michael Kenna is listed as an 8 x 8 inch sepia toned gelatin silver print. This photograph is mounted onto a 20 x 16 inch mat board, with a window overmat. It is available in an edition of 45. This photograph is signed, dated and numbered in pencil on mount margin recto; as well as signed, titled, negative date, print date and numbered by Michael Kenna on mount verso. Michael Kenna's black and white photographs are powerful and alluring. His imagery transports you to iconic and placid landscapes where you can gaze in solitude. Because Kenna makes such long exposures, often minutes or sometimes hours long, the landscape presents itself as something that cannot be seen with the naked eye, abstracting reality. This is a trademark of his work for which he has become legendary. Michael Kenna's photographs are housed in over 100 museum and institution collections throughout the world, including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, George Eastman House, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Musée national d'Art modern, Paris, San Francisco Modern Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He has received several awards including an Honorary Master of Arts from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, and the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the Ministry of Culture, France.

  • #19, 1970s Nightclubs of Chicago South Side - Rare Vintage Silver Gelatin Print
    Located in London, GB
A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...

In this captivating black and white photograph, the scene unfolds with young ballet dancers adorned in pristine white tutus. Positioned before a window, soft natural light bathes the space, casting gentle highlights and shadows on their poised figures. The dancers are in the midst of preparation, their graceful postures capturing a serene moment of anticipation before practice. The contrast between the purity of their tutus and the shadows adds a timeless elegance to the composition, emphasizing both the discipline and artistry inherent in ballet.
