About the Item

Welcome to the Jungle Kalimantan, Borneo - 2024 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta Paper. Available Sizes: Standard 37" x 66" Unframed 52" x 81" Framed Edition of 12 Large 56" x 100" Unframed 71" x 115" Framed Edition of 12 "I am a big fan of Nassim Taleb’s book - Fooled by Randomness - which is essentially the study of how we wrongly attribute good results to skill, but often tend to dismiss bad results as simply a consequence of being undone by bad luck. This is true in financial trading, sports scores and facets of everyday life. Taleb argued that the truth was different and the random walk of luck spreads itself evenly throughout life and some achievements are, in fact, totally a result of good fortune: we just find it affirming to think otherwise. I took this picture in Kalimantan, Borneo one afternoon in late April 2024 and it certainly outscores any previous pictures I have taken of orangutans. I saw the possibility slowly unfolding in front of me, but whether there would be that one moment in time, when everything was symmetrically aligned, was really just down to good fortune. I had that one glimpse and took it. It’s luck, but having said that, I won’t take it back. I want to thank the senior park rangers in Kalimantan who granted me permits and guided me up river to a particular bend where they knew there tended to be several orangutans. We were a long way from anywhere that I had heard of that night and I could only have done this with the help of the wonderful team of locals in Borneo. It’s a team sport and what a team we had that afternoon. I think orangutans are the smartest animals I have ever filmed and their gestures, postures and general behaviour are very close to home." - David Yarrow

  • Syrian Girl by Zack Whitford - Contemporary Portrait Photography
    By Zack Whitford
    Located in Chicago, IL
Syrian Girl Beqaa Valley, 2015 Zack Whitford’s expertise lies in capturing facial expressions and emotions as they occur, creating truly empathetic images. The gaze of the young Syrian girl who was photographed at a refugee camp in the Beqaa Valley incorporates the entire thesis of Humanity, instantly drawing the audience to her and forcing them to care for her, whether consciously or not. To view this image is to realize that Whitford’s stance is not to convey his own emotions, but to reveal to his audience that which already exists in the world of humankind and why we should care for it. Art Shay Gale Sayers #40, 1966 archival pigment print 20.25 x 24.25 framed 3/3 ASY028 “Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel...
