Slim Aarons
'Nelda And Friends' Palm Springs (Slim Aarons Estate Edition)

1970

About the Item

'Nelda And Friends' by Slim Aarons Set to become another Slim Aaron favourite - it's better known cousins 'Poolside Gossip' and 'Desert House Party' (also listed) are considered to be true modern masterpieces of photography - and this new Archive discovery from the same series is no exception. Ladies by the pool at the Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, California, January 1970. From right to left, former fashion model Helen Dzo Dzo Kaptur (in white lace), unknown, Nelda Linsk (in yellow), wife of art dealer Joseph Linsk, and actress Lita Baron (in white sunhat). The Linsks are the current owners of the house. This photograph was taken during the same party as Slim Aaron's now also iconic 'Desert House Party' photograph (see our other listings) and is just as much a true moment of an era captured on film. This photograph epitomises the Travel, Lifestyle and Glamour of the period's wealthy and famous, and spirit of vacation, beautifully documented by Aarons. In his words, he loved to photograph 'beautiful people in beautiful places, doing beautiful things'. A beautiful and classic Slim Aarons C-type photograph, Limited Edition to 150 only, numbered and stamped by The Slim Aarons Estate on verso. Supplied with certificate of authenticity. With a career spanning over four decades, Gigli's visual narratives have appeared in prominent international publications such as TIME, LIFE, Paris Match, and Colliers. Gigli began his journey in the 1950s, gaining recognition for his captivating photographs of theater, film, and dance. His subjects were a medley of cultural icons - Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Anita Ekberg, Marcel Duchamp, Willem de Kooning, John F. Kennedy, Halston, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Laurence Olivier, Alan Bates, Richard Burton, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and many more. His approach to portraiture was as much about his technical prowess and compositional elegance as it was about his ability to elicit his subject's spirit and character, a skill that would mark him as one of the luminaries of his time, akin to contemporaries such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Diane Arbus. Yet, the pièce de résistance of Gigli's illustrious career is the iconic photograph known as "Girls in the Windows," taken in 1960. This masterwork exemplifies Gigli's innovative vision and ability to transform the everyday into a tableau vivant of unparalleled aesthetic appeal. The image depicts 43 women poised in the windows of a New York City brownstone, exuding an ephemeral vibrancy that captures the essence of 1960s fashion and art photography. Born George Allen Aarons, he spent his youth in New Hampshire and New York before joining the army during World War II, where his photography career began. Working throughout his career with magazines like Life, Holiday, and Town & Country gave Aarons the chance to document the jet-set lifestyle of Hollywood stars, American and European socialites, and other celebrated figures.
