About the Item
Orbit, Jiro Yonezawa, bamboo, urushi lacquer, 9.75” x 13" x 7.75", 2019.
This abstract bamboo sculpture is by Japanese artist, Jiro Yonezawa (b. 1956). Yonezawa has worked with bamboo for over 35 years. He has studied in Beppu and spent a year as an apprentice to Masakazu Ono. From 1989 to 2007, he lived and worked in the United States where, influenced by American art, his work became bolder, larger and more sculptural. For Yonezawa, “the process of preparing strips to weave and then weaving forms from those strips is inherently meditative. The cacophony of life dissipates; the sculpture emerges vigorous and vibrant. Form, contrast, balance and the interplay of space, color, and texture are the elements I consider. With each new series I strive to be innovative and to tease out another emotion from the woven bamboo shape.”
"Bamboo basketry for me is an expression of detailed precision. In each basket there is the contrast of disciplined formality in technique and natural freedom in form. There is an element of intrigue and an element of complexity for what lies beyond form. These baskets represent a search for the beauty and precision in nature and a way to balance the chaos evident in these times." -- Jiro Yonezawa

Jiro Yonezawa
Jiro Yonezawa is a Japanese artist that uses bamboo basketry as an expression of detailed precision. With each artwork he creates, there is a contrast of disciplined formality in technique and natural freedom in form. Jiro Yonezawa has received numerous awards for his bamboo vessels and sculpture. Formally trained in Beppu, Japan, Yonezawa then moved to the US, and when he did so, the lacquered twill-patterned form associated with Beppu was transformed by the artist into sensuous sculptural vessels, formal yet more freely formed. Statement:
"Bamboo basketry for me is an expression of detailed precision. In each basket there is the contrast of disciplined formality in technique and natural freedom in form. There is an element of intrigue and an element of complexity for what lies beyond form. These baskets represent a search for the beauty and precision in nature and a way to balance the chaos evident in these times."
