after 1800

About the Item

A very interesting Italian white marble statuary sculpture of Saint Jospeh with Jesus Christ as child, Italian school of the 19th Century. Saint Joseph portrayed in full, with the lily flower in his right hand and resting along his arm until it almost reaches the shoulder and with his left hand he supports the baby Jesus Christ who holds a sphere under his left hand. The heads of both lean on each other and their gazes are turned towards the sphere which under the left hand of the child Jesus symbolizes the world for whose salvation the Son of God will become a martyr. The lily flower in Christian iconography symbolizes Holiness; it also is symbol of trust in providence in fact Jesus teaches in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, inviting us to take example from the lilies to learn to trust in God's Providence.
