About the Item
an interesting and beautiful sculpture of Venus, knew as Venus de' Medici, depicts the goddess in a fugitive, momentary pose, as if surprised in the act of emerging from the sea, to which the dolphin at her feet alludes.Carved in the 19th century in a pure and elegant white marble, the sculpture here presented with the height of 81 m is a scale version of the original that has an height of 153 displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The statue, a Venus pudica, is inspired, like the other variants of the theme, by Praxiteles' Cnidian Aphrodite, with particular similarities to the Capitoline Venus. The work arrived in Rome at an unspecified time in antiquity and perhaps decorated Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. In the Renaissance, with the collecting fever of the great families present in the city, it was probably purchased by the then cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici to be exhibited at Villa Medici, even if the first certain documentation dates back to 1638. In 1677 it was brought to Florence by Cosimo III, who despite his reputation as a "bigot", had no problem placing the beautiful naked goddess in the Uffizi Tribune. Since then he has occupied a place of privilege in the gallery's collection of ancient statues.
There are two inscriptions, one on the front which reads Canova, probably a tribute to the famous Italian sculptor and one on the back which probably refers to the author

- ORPHEUS Neoclassical White Marble Sculpture 19' CenturyLocated in Rome, ITUnique Carrara white marble finely carved sculpture of Orpheus , Mythological personification of the eternal love and art. Henry Dasson French 1825 - 1896 Orpheus white marble, on a gilt bronze base 75.5cm., 29 3/4 in. overall The renowned Parisian maker of gilt-bronze mounted furniture, Henry Dasson, began his career as a bronze sculptor. Occasionally marbles with his signature have appeared on the art market. It is likely that these were made in his workshop at 106, rue Vielle du Temple, which specialised in the production of bronze artifacts and clocks. Dasson's success was such that he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle. In the Greek myth Orpheus, son of the muse Calliope and Apollo – or of the king of Thrace, Eagro – is the poet par excellence, the personification of song. With his lyre and his words he manages to seduce men, animals of all species and even trees, stones and the sea. With the strength of his verses he moves, softens, excites, touches the soul and the fibers of those who have the opportunity to listen to him. Orpheus falls in love with the nymph Eurydice and marries her. Yet the fate of the two lovers...Category
