Andrew Lyman Paintings
Andrew Lyman remains committed to realism, though his style elicits some sort of mysterious dreamscape quality that is hard to put your finger on. It's the sort of distinctive quality that marks the works of significant emerging artists. Lyman’s statement about his work in general, “My paintings draw from movies and photographs to create images that appear cinematic in structure, but lack the illusion of decisiveness intrinsic to that medium. Leading lines fracture the picture plane, encouraging the eye to wander through narratives that are never quite conclusive. These are not climactic moments or characters of action. They, like us, are prone to looking around—often at one another; a little bewildered, somewhat remote. Certain figures and objects are rendered in detail, while others might be reduced to a flattened silhouette, or are dripping away, or else are only suggested by a rogue protruding limb. All that goes unsaid evokes a sense of unease that is distinct from our time.”

"I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now.
As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space.
My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair.
Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. Carol Bennett spends all of her time surrounded by water, and a great deal within it. Her work is a meditative journey through both the water and through life. She is intrigued by how life continues to flow and change, being both in the moment and timeless. The viewer will experience being in a state “flow” – where the currents of the ocean suspend life and self, and the unexpected floats to the surface.
Carol's work has been featured in many solo and group exhibits throughout California, New York, Martha's Vineyard and Hawaii including a 2007 solo show at the First Hawaiian Center at the Contemporary Museum of Art (Honolulu) and a 2018 group show "Making Waves" exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art. Her work was seen alongside April Gornik, Agnes Martin, Kiki Smith, and Pat Steir. In 2019, she was also featured in exhibits at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, the Hawaii State Art Museum and a solo exhibit at the Honolulu Museum of Art. She has been featured in Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, Ocean Home Magazine and the New York Times. Carol's artwork has also been featured in Designer Showhouses in Westchester NY and the Hamptons, and is part of public and private collections around the world.
