Clifford Ellis Art

British, 1907-1985

Clifford Ellis was born in Bognor in Sussex and trained at Saint Martin’s School of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic. He was a graphic artist and illustrator who is best known for the posters he produced for London Transport during the 1930s. Ellis generally collaborated on posters with his wife, Rosemary, whom he married in 1931. The General Post Office, Shell and the Empire Marketing Board were also clients for the couple's posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order, and they are readily recognizable by their ebullient use of color and form. 

Employed during the war as a camoufleur, along with so many other artists, Ellis was also an official war artist, serving with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary, meanwhile, was an artist for the Recording Britain project. Following the war, they trained art teachers at the Bath Academy of Art. They also designed a series of nearly 100 book jackets for the New Naturalist series, published by Collins between 1945–82, and were always fascinated by animals and natural history.

Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) Hens by a chicken shed at Corsham Court Watercolour 37x56cm Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Here Ellis paints the hens at Corsham Court together with their chicken shed. Born in Bognor in Sussex and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic, Ellis was a graphic artist and illustrator who is best known for the posters he produced for London Transport during the 1930s. He generally collaborated with his wife Rosemary – whom he married in 1931 – on their posters. The General Post Office, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board were also clients for their posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order and they are readily recognisable by their ebullient use of colour and form. Employed during the war as a camoufleur, along with so many other artists, Clifford was also an official war artist, serving with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary, meanwhile, was an artist for the Recording Britain project. Following the war they trained art teachers at Bath Academy of Art. They also designed a series of nearly one hundred book jackets for Collins New Naturalist series, published between 1945 and 1982. Clifford Ellis studied illustration at the Regent Street Polytechnic, an institution that specialised in ’practical trade classes’, from 1924-27. He went on to design book covers (notably for Collins’ ‘New Naturalist’ series) and posters for London Transport, the General Post Office, Shell-Mex, the Empire Marketing Board and J. Lyons & Co., along with his wife, Rosemary Ellis, whom he married in 1931 while he was teaching at the Polytechnic. The couple’s poster designs combine striking colour with bold typography and depict stylised scenes of the countryside, birds and animals. The depiction of flamingo and Spanish hair comb is an author's play around similar sounding words. The prevalent colours are pink, green and grey. The picture size is 16x12 in (40,5x30 cm) Alisa Fomina, 1989, Minsk (Belarus). Born in an environment with artistic traditions, raised in Andalusia and currently residing in Madrid, Spain. Graduated in Advertising and Public Relations, University Rey Juan Carlos, 2013 (Madrid, Spain). Since childhood, influenced by family artistic tradition and dedicated to drawing that resulted in the First Prize at the XI Christmas Card Contest (2004) and First Prize at the XII Contest in 2005, Marbella. Her work, mostly paintings and drawings are made for private collectors. However she has been participating with different brands like the Spanish brand ‘Citrique Sunglasses’. In 2016 a collaboration with the "Italian Institute of Culture" in the lectures of the writer Giorgio Caproni with an illustration of the writer. As well, the participation in the project of the Italian writer Alessandro Ferraro in the book '' The secret galleries of the soul. Giorgio Caproni '', for Ediciones Complutense with the portrait of Giorgio Caproni, 2019. A collaboration with the Spanish newspaper ‘El Pais’ with an illustration in one of his reports of the singer Nick Cave. In November 2016 made a deck designed exclusively for ‘Correos España’, the national postal service, in the "Generations Collection", whose originals are exhibited at the Galería Cartel of Málaga in April and May 2017. The illustrations have a graphic technique with the use of materials such as acrylic paint, watercolor pencils and felt-tip pens. Influenced by the children's world taking as reference the old cartoons, their stories and fantasy with very small details and always with vivid colors. Italian Modern Abstract Work on Paper Color Field Non-Objective European Mid-Century - "Gonage" Dorazio completed "Gonage" in 1949 when just after the artist had been awarded a stipend by the French government and admission to the Academy Beaux Arts. There he met George Braque who became great friends but also an influence on Dorazio, of which "Gonage" is a living testament. "Gonage" actual size of the drawing measures 12 x 9 1/2 inches. It is signed on the lower right. The work is affixed to a 19 x 15 inch board which includes the artist's signature and date. There is a torn table on the lower left entitling the piece "Gonage". Provenance follows this piece as a gift in 1950 to the artist-colleague Luigi Lucioni, who then gifted it in 1955 to his friend, the uncle of the current owner who has owned the work since 1988. Bio Born in Italy, Piero Dorazio studied architecture in Rome. At the same time his first abstract works were executed. In 1947 he received a scholarship from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he contacted Modern artists, who lived in Paris. He founded the galleries "Age d'Or" in Florence and Rome to represent avant-garde arts in Italy. Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) Sosicles I (1934) Theatrical costume design Pencil and watercolour 32x18cm Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Born in Bognor in Sussex and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic, Ellis was a graphic artist and illustrator who is best known for the posters he produced for London Transport during the 1930s. He generally collaborated with his wife Rosemary – whom he married in 1931 – on their posters. The General Post Office, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board were also clients for their posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order and they are readily recognisable by their ebullient use of colour and form. Employed during the war as a camoufleur, along with so many other artists, Clifford was also an official war artist, serving with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary, meanwhile, was an artist for the Recording Britain project. Following the war they trained art teachers at Bath Academy of Art. They also designed a series of nearly one hundred book jackets for Collins New Naturalist series, published between 1945 and 1982. Clifford Ellis studied illustration at the Regent Street Polytechnic, an institution that specialised in ’practical trade classes’, from 1924-27. He went on to design book covers (notably for Collins’ ‘New Naturalist’ series) and posters for London Transport, the General Post Office, Shell-Mex, the Empire Marketing Board and J. Lyons & Co., along with his wife, Rosemary Ellis, whom he married in 1931 while he was teaching at the Polytechnic. The couple’s poster designs combine striking colour with bold typography and depict stylised scenes of the countryside, birds and animals.
