Elise Wagner Art

American
Elise Wagner painter, printmaker, and teacher, is a recent recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, Elise relocated to Portland, Oregon over 30 years ago. Her initial captivation with the geology, and the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, lead her to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree at Portland State University. She studied geology, physics and environmental biology with the intention of weaving them into what would become the fabric of her work. Elise was also awarded a residency at Vermont Studio Center. Making the Pacific Northwest her home base has continually nurtured her lifelong creative pursuit of merging art with science. Artist Statement: My work is inspired by and evolves alongside new developments made in astronomy, physics and the environment. I approach each painting as if I am laying down a map to an unknown destination and have always been intrigued by how we define our sense of place by way of cartography and architecture. My aim is to translate visually through the use of color, line, texture and light." About the Process: Encaustic collagraph "monoprints" can be created using various mark making techniques such as dry point etching directly into the plate and through the wax texture making it possible to use the plate again and again (up to at many as 20 pulls) varying the colors for small editions. The plate can also be enhanced, changed or completely re-created after making one unique print from it, this would be considered a "monotype" (one type). Typical tools for building the encaustic collagraph plate are ceramic incising and scraping tools. Heated tools, such as a tacking iron and a heated wax writer are recommended. With this method, fusing the wax is optional and not necessary.

About: Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and gestural. She often works with a limited color palette of encaustic pigment and uses an iterative and spontaneous approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation sometimes include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and sentimental hand-written text from historical, contemporary, or autobiographical sources. Washi Paper: The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic. Shipping: The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message Alena directly to make arrangements. Matte and Frame Ideas: Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype; glass will "flatten" the monotype) Traditional frames with or without a matte When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors. ’Pisces’ Please note. This is not a mono print but 1st Dibs have option for Relief print. Which is what this is... By Yutaka Takayanagi. Medium - Relief print Edition - AP Signed - Yes Size - 510mm x 660mm Date - 1973 Condition - Excellent. 10 out of 10. Born in Tokyo in 1941, Takayanagi's artistic journey began when he enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960, studying under the renowned oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi. His talent was quickly recognized when he received an Honorable Mention at the 8th Shell Arts Award Exhibition in the same year. During his time at university, Takayanagi took an intensive course in copper plate printing under Tetsuro Komai, receiving his degree from the graduate school in 1966. Fascinated by the simultaneous color print method, he started creating copperplate prints and soon gained recognition for his unique metallic reliefs, which he produced using collages of English newspapers. Takayanagi's passion for experimentation led him to create metallic emboss reliefs using his own photographs, and in the latter half of the 1980s, he moved on to silkscreen prints. He continued to push the boundaries of his art, constantly exploring new techniques and mediums. In 1978 and the following year, Takayanagi was appointed as an arts researcher for the Ministry of Culture and traveled to the United States, France, and the UK. These experiences enriched his artistic perspective and further cemented his reputation as a highly regarded artist. Takayanagi was part of the influential printmaking group Sosaku Hanga, which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. This movement emphasized the artist's involvement in every stage of the printmaking process, from designing the image to carving and printing the blocks. Takayanagi's work often incorporates elements of nature and landscape, with an emphasis on texture and pattern. He also experimented with collage, incorporating found materials like newspaper clippings and photographs into his prints. Takayanagi's work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. He has also received numerous awards for his contributions to printmaking, including the Japan Print Association Award and the Purple Ribbon Medal...
