Henri Picard Candle Holders

French

Henri Picard was a 19th-century gilder who is said to have graced Paris with his stunning furniture and decor from 1831 to 1864. His bronze pieces included exquisitely detailed candelabras, ornate clocks and sculptural table lamps.

Each item cast and gilded by the talented Picard represented the marriage of function and beauty and is a notable example of Napoleon III-style design. Developing from 1852–70, Napoleon III furniture was plush and ornate, matching the fashion for masked balls and socializing in salons.

Picard was particularly known for his artistry — his body of work includes expertly cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts for a range of porcelain vessels produced by Sèvres, a maker of exemplary European ceramics for hundreds of years. Picard collaborated with many designers of his day and worked for a firm called Defreville. And while Picard received numerous commissions, his most notable was designing decorative objects for Napoleon III. The pieces are still displayed at the Napoleon III Apartments in the Louvre Museum, Paris.

Picard also designed mantel clocks for the prestigious French clock-making company Raingo Frères. The manufacturer’s clocks are also on display in the Napoleon III Apartments.

The large and impressive pair of ten-light candelabra, each with a patinated figure of a standing bearded semi-nude male holding an ornate ormolu ten-light candelabrum, their bare feet resting on allegorical wreaths, helmet and sword stash, all above square black-slate plinth surmounted with ormolu trims and scrolled legs, the front surmounted with patinated bronze plaques depicting Greco-Roman scenes of Senators and maidens. Stamped "H. Picard" on the inner ring, the back of the male figures each stamped with the numerals "3776". Circa: Paris, 1850-1860. The well regarded fondeur and doreur Henri Picard was recorded at 6 rue Jarente in 1831, and moved to 10 rue de la Perle in 1839. The firm, which was active from 1831-1864, is known for having supplied very fine decorative objects to Emperor Napoleon III's apartments at the Louvre, which are still part of the collection, and was reputed for its fine quality decorative production of gilt and patinated bronzes, pièce de table and garnitures de cheminée...

Important Pair of Belle Epoque Ormolu Candelabras w Frog Sculptures by H. Picard
By Henri Picard
Located in Lisse, NL
Truly unique pair of gilt bronze table candelabras by Henri Picard of Paris, France. These amazingly sculptural antique candelabras for more than one reason have the wow factor. First of all, they are made by one of the most famous and celebrated metal workers and 'fondeurs' of mid 19th century Paris. This artisan was commissioned by many important 'patrons', but Henri Picard’s most notable achievement was to supply Napoleon 3rd with various decorative antiques, some of which are still in the State Apartment of the Louvre Museum. The second reason why these candelabras are in a league of their own is the subject matter. Almost all Belle Epoque antiques have classical-world subject matters, but this pair clearly is different and it is this difference that makes this pair even more unique and remarkable. It is almost as if Henri Picard had already caught a glimpse of what was to come three or four decades later. We say so, because the subject matter (with animals and lotus or lily leafs and their organic design) is almost Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts in style. At the base of each of these candelabras are three endearing frog sculptures crouching under lotus leafs. A little further up the stem are a snail, a fly and a beetle sculpture, three creatures that regularly are on the frogs menu. And with the importance of frogs in French culture these candelabras also are of cultural historical significance. The third reason why we believe these works of art are of museum quality are the details. Besides the amphibian, mollusk and insects sculptures, you simply cannot overlook the remarkable details in the leafs, the branches and the floral decorations. They are of a quality and beauty that will make people want to stop, to look at and to study them. Like they would in a museum. Even all the original and removable bobeches AND the two bronze candle extinguishers...
