Hermann Corrodi Art
Italian, 1844-1905
Herman Corrodi was a Swiss Painter. He was the son of Salomon Corrodi. A New York Times obituary indicates that Hermann was born in Zurich, however his grave marker indicates that he was born in Frascati, which is near Rome.
Corrodi studied at the Accademia di S. Luca under his father, Salomon Corrodi (1810–1892) and in Paris (1872). He received commissions for history paintings from the British royal family and was acquainted with most of the European royalty of the time, including a friendship with Queen Victoria and travelled widely in the Far East, including Egypt, Syria, Cyprus and Istanbul, which provided the subject for many of his paintings.
He is the brother of Arnold Corrodi. Originally a landscape painter in the academic style, much of Hermann's work is also typical of the Orientalism style of the 19th century. In 1893 he was knighted 'Accademico di Merito' by the Accademia di San Luca, where he had been a professor.
The father of the Hermann Corrodi came to Rome early in the last century and established himself here as a watercolour painter. Hermann, who has just died, was born In the little town of Frascati, 12 miles from Rome. He inherited the talent of his father, and every encouragement and assistance to the development of his artistic faculties were given him. Like several other Roman artists, he was gifted with eye-memory, certain effects in nature and certain Impressions of subjects and land scapes remained clearly pictured in his min from the age of 6 years, and 20 years afterward he painted what he considered one of his best pictures from an impression received at that early age.
Like most other painters, Hermann Corrodi desired to study the works of contemporary painters In other countries. He, with his younger brother Arnold, was sent to Germany ; and they also passed some time with the painter Calame at Geneva. But it was in Paris that they felt themselves most benefited. There they were possessed with a great enthusiasm for the French school, and from this time onward there Is a complete change in their treatment of subjects and mode of work.
Hermann became the painter of poetic landscapes. The Mediterranean, with its blue waters and sun-bleached shores, the life and motion and colour of processions in the little cities on religious festivals and views near Rome In the ever-changing, ever-beautiful Campagna, formed the choice subjects of Corrodi's brush.(Biography provided by Chastelain & Butes)

Antonio Palma is the least well-known member of the illustrious Palma family of Venetian painters of the 16th century. He was the nephew of Jacopo Palma—Palma il Vecchio—and upon his uncle’s death in 1528, he began to work with Palma Vecchio’s principal student and the inheritor of the elder artist’s studio, Bonifazio de’ Pitati (Bonifazio Veronese). Antonio worked with Bonifazio as his principal assistant and right-hand man until Bonifazio’s death in 1553, after which he continued his independent career. He married a niece of his master, and their second son, Jacopo, born in 1648, would achieve fame as Palma il Giovane...

Woman with Two Children in Red - Dutch Style Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas
By Joseph Tomanek

Woman with Two Children in Red - Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas
Lovely interior scene by notable artist Joseph Tomanek (Cech-American, 1889-1974). A woman sits near a window, holding a small child dressed in bright red in her lap. Another child, somewhat older, stands next to her, looking at the young child. Soft lights spills though the window, illuminating the scene in a warm glow. A plant with red flowers sits on the windowsill, and foliage can be seen outside.
Signed "Tomanek" in the lower right corner (note that the shape above the signature is a toy train)
Presented in a carved wood frame with a linen liner.
Frame size: 30.75"H x 26.75"W
Canvas size: 24"H x 20"W
Tomanek, the son of a carpenter, was born in Moravia. His family discouraged his art talent and wanted him to be a shoemaker. He studied in his homeland of Czechoslovakia at the School of Design in Prague. He emigrated to America around the turn of the century and arrived in Chicago in 1910 and worked as an interior decorator. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with Antonin Sterba. He also studied with Albert Krehbiel and K.A. Buehr.
He was a member of the Bohemian Artist Club, Association of Chicago Painters, and Sculptors, and the Chicago Gallery Association. His work is included in the collection of the Vanderpoel Art Association (Chicago). He exhibited from the 1910s-40s, including exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Georgia Museum of Art.
Of the difficulty of posing nudes in Chicago, he said, "In Paris you can rent little gardens studios and pose your models there in privacy. Here, if I work out of doors, I have to pose the girls in bathing suits...

Mother and child with a rose
Oil on wood, 44,5 x 33,5 cm
signed
The artist of this outstanding painting is completely unknown so far. There is no entry under "L. Franssen" in any encyclopaedia or reference work. There was a Dutch artist, Jan Fransen (1604/5 - ca. 1646), who was mainly based in Amsterdam. According to Thieme/Becker, he created numerous paintings with biblical depictions, study heads and still lifes. However, it could also have been Jan Franssen or Frantzen, who was not born until 1644 but was also active in Amsterdam. However, no confirmed works by either artist are known.
Just as interesting as the attribution is the depiction: a young woman holds her child on her lap while she prepares a meal on a hob. At the same time she holds a rose in her hand. Most likely, Mary is depicted here with the young Jesus...
